Rotary Club SBN 07/10/24 luncheon/meeting at Rusty’s Pizza Parlor

Meeting called to order by President 2024-25 Cathy Calabro.

Flag salute and flute invocation by Emiliano Campobello.

Introduction of visitors: Mary Garza, spouse of Blas Garza. Blake, son of Kathy Bazarganan. Blake will be entering San Marcos High School in the fall and is interested in knowing more about the Interact Club of San Marcos High School.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY month to members: Kathy Bazarganan, Marti Correa de Garcia, and Mary Garza.

ROTARY CLUB SBN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

ANNUAL MEETING

Mike Bergquist gave a brief update on the Foundation. The Foundation has granted over $672,026.00 since it was founded in 1982. Since a quorum was not present at the meeting a vote for Board members was not held, it will be held at the July 24, 2024, meeting. “The Foundation (FCSBNCF) is the flagship of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North. It is our vehicle to the local community through which thousands of dollars are contributed each year to deserving activities.” Please become a member of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North Charitable Foundation for the fiscal year July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025, in the amount of $10.00 per membership.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Treasurer, Tim Hardy announced that the quarterly billings will be going out in a few weeks for the new Rotary year. Please make sure all past Rotary Club SBN invoices are current. Call Tim (805-284-8944) if you have any questions or clarifications.

Cathy Calabro has set up a Rotary Blood Drive Day with Vitalant Mobile Blood Bank, scheduled for Saturday, September 14, 20024 from 11:00-12:00 PM at La Cumbre Macy’s lower parking lot. Please mark your calendars and tell friends and relatives.

The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise is looking for volunteers for their DOLPHIN DERBY FESTIVAL, Sunday, July 14, 2024, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm at Chase Palm Park. You can sign-up at www.dolphinderby.com You can also adopt a dolphin on the same website. If you choose a charity, 50% of the $10 dolphin purchase will go to the charity of your choice,

MEGA BUCKS

Tom Jacobs pledged a Mega Buck in honor of Roberto Najera returning to the meetings after a short absence.

Blas Garza pledged a Mega Buck honoring Mary Garza’s birthday.

Gil Garcia pledged a Mega Buck honoring Marti Correa de Garcia’s birthday, plus an upcoming trip to Mexico where he will be going to a Rotary “Protesta” for the incoming Rotary Club of Guadalajara President.

Kathy Bazarganan pledged two Mega Bucks because she has missed lots of meetings and one for her birthday.

OPPORTUNITY DRAWING

Jim Lisa won the chance to pick the “red” marble and take home the jackpot, not much since Patricia Juin took home the big jackpot at the last meeting . . . Jim didn’t pick the right marble. Emiliano Campobello had the winning ticket and took home The Berryman” gift certificate.

ALEXANDRA SHINN

GUEST SPEAKER – ALEXANDRA SHINN

Alexandra or Alex participated in the 2024 RYLA program; she will be a senior at San Marcos High School in the fall. Alex is an incredibly involved student, she was in the San Marcos High Band for several years, but this year will be more involved in the school fine arts department. She loves to cook, involved in the culinary department, starting her own baking business that specializes in decorative cupcakes.

She spoke about her experiences at RYLA and how she made new friends and the leadership skills that will serve her will in the future. On the last day of RYLA program she wrote the following letter to past-president Gil Garcia:

“Thank you so much for sponsoring my trip to RYLA. It was a memorable experience that I will cherish forever. The leadership, teamworking, and life skills UI have learned here I will use for the entirety of my life. I have learned about ethics, character, presentation, confidence, and myself. I appreciate this opportunity to meet so many new people, network, and make new friends for life. This retreat with no phones, in the beautiful outdoors, has made me appreciate life itself without the blinding screens of social media. The presenter Jim Brogan really inspired me to start something little everyday so that it compounds into something new that will become a strength. My goal one day is to become an architect or in hospitality, that way I can take all the design, creativity, and networking skills that have been amplified here at RYLA and apply it to internships and my future professions. My time at camp has taught me that you should focus on your goals, and nothing can stop you but yourself, so push past your limits and reach the stars. Through this experience, I have been inspired to become more involved in our Rotary in Santa Barbara and provide my philanthropic and creative skills to assist the greater good. I appreciate you and our Rotary Club for sending me to RYLA, and I would love to go again one day!!!” THANK YOU, ALEXANDRA
