ANNOUNCMENTS
Cathy Calabro announced that the A-to-Z Cooking School will be hosting our club for lunch on September 18, 2024. The school is located on the grounds of the former St. Anthony Seminary.
Cathy Calabro announced that last weekend 4 students sponsored by our club attended the RYLA program. One of the students is the Co-President of the Interact Rotary Club at San Marcos High School . . . yes, the one we support. The students have been invited to our lunch/meeting to talk about their experiences at RYLA camp.
Veronica Gallardo handed out the article that appeared in Noozhawk about the Four-Way Test Essay Contest at Adams School.
On Wednesday, April 23rd our club is invited to a reception at the Santa Barbara County School office for awards that will be given to the Sister Cities Young Artist Showcase participants. Our club sponsored one of the winning entries.
Not too late to RSVP to an evening social/dinner Wednesday, April 24th 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Mental Health Center, 617 Garden St, SB. Parking on street or if available underground at the Center. We will be celebrating with the Santa Barbara/Puerto Vallarta Sister City Committee, kicking off “Mental Wellness” month in May. Rotary International President R. Gordon R. Cathy Calabro announced "Purses for a Cause" event to benefit The Mary Kay Ash Foundation which supports cancers affecting women and domestic violence issues. Thursday, May 9th from 4:00 to 6:30 pm at the lovely patio of Marti Correa de Garcia, 2215 Santa Barbara St, SB. Lots of fun, opportunity drawings, and silent auction. MEGA BUCKS
Gil Garcia pledged a Mega Buck in celebration of his 41st Wedding Anniversary with wife Marti Correa de Garcia.
Cathy Calabro pledged a Mega Buck in honor of the San Marcos High School Jazz Band traveling to the World Strides Heritage Festival in Chicago and winning the SPIRIT award for ensemble that best represents the heart and values of the Festival. OVATION award to Joshlin Santos given to one student in the whole Festival, INDIVIDUAL awards to Eliel Pozos and Lucas Carrara. ADJUDICATOR award given only to schools above a score of 92, FIRST PLACE and a perfect 100 score by one of the judges (very, very rare). Cathy’s son is the band director, Michael Kiyoi.
OPPORTUNITY DRAWING
Lisa Gosdschan had the winning ticket to pick the winning marble, but no luck! Joe Lanza won The Berry Man fruit/vegetable certificate and generously gave it to Lisa Gosdschan for her CADA clients.
Ms. Palacio, an internationally-lauded poet, author, and speaker, is the Santa Barbara’s first Chicana Poet Laureate. Her chapbook, Folsom Lockdown, won Kulupi Press’ Sense of Place award. Her novel, Ocotillo Dreams, received the Mariposa Award for Best First Book at the 2012 International Latino Book Awards, as well as a PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles Award for Excellence in Literature. Her full-length poetry collection, How Fire Is a Story, Waiting, received First Prize in Poetry at the International Latino Book Awards. Her work has also been featured on the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day Program. Locally, Melinda received first place in Poetry at the 2003 Santa Barbara Writers Conference. She grew up in South Central Los Angeles and now lives in Santa Barbara and New Orleans. She holds an M.A.in comparative literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Ms. Palacio started off with a poem reading of her father’s time in Folsom Prison (very moving) and finished with a delightful guitar playing and singing from one of her poems.
