Membership Meeting
 
Meeting called to order by President Cathy Calabro.
 
Flag salute & invocation by Dr. Steve Young.
 
Introduction of visiting guests:  Dave Huber, Rotary Club of Westminster, Westminster, Colorado.  Dave and his wife spend winters in Santa Barbara, he has visited water well sites in Kenya, Africa with Joe Lanza. Welcome back Dave to your Rotary Club away from home.
 
Introduction of visiting guestsHolly Boniface was invited by John Engstrom. Holly is a professional helicopter pilot and just moved to Santa Barbara, she is interested in joining a Rotary Club.
 
Michael Viebeck was invited by Jim Lisi.  Michael is a commercial loan officer at Riveria Bank and is interested in joining a Rotary Club.
 
SPECIAL RECOGNITION
 
 
President Cathy bestowed John Engstrom with a Rotary Club 60 years of service plaque. In accepting his award, he quoted Mark Twain:  “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”  We wish him many more years of Rotary service.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
President Cathy Calabro announced the Rotary Club of SBN Family Halloween Boo Bash needs sponsorship. When you get this newsletter the Boo Bash event will have taken place last Saturday, October 26th at Plaza del Mar Pershing Park.
 
Emiliano Campobello updated us on the Adams School Mural Project.  Great progress, Adams School students will be working on their individual fish.  Lots of local sponsors are contributing to the success of this project.  Emiliano will keep us informed on the unveiling of the mural.
 
Jacqualine Duran showed us “The Owl” that is being set-up for Rotarians to get access to the meetings if they are unable to attend in person.  A link on our Rotary  website will be published shortly.
 
Donna Eyman is looking for additional RYLA students.  If you have a potential high school student interested in this life changing program, please contact Donna at:  805-455-2441.

Gil Garcia, immediate past-president is heading up a committee to find the next President-Nominee for 2026-2027.  If you get a phone call asking for your service, please consider the position.
 
Lisa Gosdschan announced that our Rotary Club will meet on November 13 and 20 due to holiday schedule.  Guest speaker on November 20th is Dave Huber.   Dave will be talking about deep sea mining for critical minerals.  On November 13th the guest speaker is Tina Ballmue from Domestic Violence Solutions.
 
Cathy Calabro announced the Annual Holiday-Auction event will take place on January 15, 2025.  Joe Dobbs is helping with arrangements at the University Club.
 
Gil Garcia & Marti Correa de Garcia invite you on Wednesday, October 30th to meet the District Governor-Elect from our District Sister Rotary Club in Mexico. We will be socializing and talking about international projects we can work together on.  Address: 2215 Santa Barbara St. 5:30-7:00 PM.
 
MEGA BUCKS
Dr. Joe Dobbs pledged a Mega Buck because Carol and he vacationed for 2 weeks in Hawaii.
 
Jim Lisi pledged a Mega Buck to honor Joe Dobbs in organizing the holiday party! He also brought up a point of order, if a personal announcement is made, it’s a Mega Buck.

Cathy Calabro pledged a Mega Buck in honor of her belated wedding anniversary which was spent in Palm Springs.  Additionally, Santa Barbara Master Chorale “Vengan Conmigo!” concert, Saturday, November 16 & 17 takes place at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Barbara.  Purchase tickets from her and you get a discount.
 
OPPORTUNITY DRAWING
Dave Huber, visiting Rotarian, won The Berryman Inc. vegetable/fruit Basket.  Mike Bergquist won the opportunity to pick the “white” marble and WON!  He generously donated the winnings to Lisa Gosdschan to purchase clothing or groceries for her families at CADA
ROTARY DISTRICT 5240 CONFERENCE
Rotary District Conference 5240 took place last weekend (October 25-27, 2024) at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo.

Barbara Muller, Rotary Peacebuilder
Barbara Gaughen-Muller is a peace scholar, advocate, activist, author and podcast host; She is internationally known for her peace work. As an inspirational speaker, her enthusiasm for peace is contagious. Her topics includeAn Agenda for the Future, The Time for Peace Is Now! Rotary & the Founding of the United Nations-Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the UN.
Barbara is President of the United Nations Association, Santa Barbara, Tri-Counties CA, Chapter (www.unasb.org), creating programs to end Sex-Trafficking, Climate Action and Solutions, On the Edge, Global Solutions to today’s Problems, Human Rights and Immigration. After her speech at the United Nations in New York, she received the Spirit of the UN award.
She is co-author of the book Revolutionary Conversations.  She hosts the Power of Peace ™ podcasts where she interviews international business and elected leaders, authors, NGO’s, teachers and everyday Peacemakers. In the 15 minute podcasts you will see how they create peace and how you can
become the peace needed in our world today. Barbara is the program director for the fastest growing Rotary E-Club, The Rotary E-Club of World Peace. She continues the peace work of her late husband,  Dr. Robert Muller, former UN Assistant Secretary General. Together, Robert and she co-created 7500 Ideas for a Better World.

  • Saturday, November 16, 2024 - 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer’s President Cathy Calabro announced that November 16 the 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place starting at Chase Palm Park Field & Beach at 10:15 am. She is a Team Captain and would like to recruit walkers for her team.
  • Rotary Club SBN Holiday & New Year Party & Auction, re-scheduled on January 15, 2025.
