Please note, the following are just a few of the answers from our esteemed Rotary Club members:
Joe Dobbs was recruited in 1959 by an original charter member; he joined to get involved with the community. Rotary was different because they did not allow women. Changes have occurred with smaller groups and smaller projects. Miss the annual tradition of all Rotary clubs meeting at the old Miramar Hotel and attendance was important. I miss all the friends who have passed. Fundraisers from members go to any Rotary Club around the world. You can travel around the world and do a make-up at a Rotary Club; I even visited a Rotary Club in Bali and got an education in Hong Kong. Greatest challenge of Rotary is membership.
Dennis Waid joined Rotary in 1977 while living in Orange County and transferred to our club in 1980 when I moved to Santa Barbara. One tradition I remember was inclusive projects. My first service project that I worked on was Adams School, it was the first school in the S.B. District that came up with a design lab. A major project I worked on was the purchase of a Fire Truck from Ventura and delivered to the Port of Peñasco. Also remember “Bowling for Kids, working with the Santa Barbara Police Department.
Gil Garcia joined Rotary in 1984. He found out about Rotary in Puerto Vallarta and was impressed on what they did. He tracked down Steve Rehage who sponsored him. Traditions where weekly meetings, men only and interactive with other local Rotary Clubs. While President in 1989-1990 women were allowed to join Rotary. One of the first service projects I worked on was an international project in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, it was the building of the Rehabilitation Clinic, which is still functioning today. I miss more social interaction between Clubs.
