Announcements:
-Tom Jacobs announced that Adams School will be sponsoring a fund-raiser, selling Axxess Cards for discounts at local stores.
-Blas Garza was presented with a Rotarian of the Year for his long service to the club in the Youth Committee.
Megabucks:
-Donna Eyman (1 MB) was challenged to enter a surfing contest, and by-god, she won first prize!
-Joe Dobbs (1 MB) provided a megabuck because he and Carol took a trip to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park
-Dr. Steve Young (1 MB) and Joan took a vacation trip to Hawaii and weathered the storms with minor inconveniences.
-Roberto Najera (1 MB), Marti Correa (1 MB) and Blas Garza (1 MB) donated a megabuck each for their 2-week trip to Ireland, Scotland and England. They attended Rotary Clubs in Dingle, Ireland and in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Dennis Waid introduced Santa Barbara North Rotarian Derek Carlson, who is a long-time member of the Rotary Club, and serves in a management position at MarBorg Industries.
Derek began by noting that the recycling business is governed by 5 different Assembly Bills, so MarBorg can’t make its own business requirements. He also noted that there has been an increase in the amount of trash that Santa Barbara generates. The more affluent that our population gets, the more trash that we dispose of. He also explained that China in 2016 took 60 percent of our waste. What they did with it was recycle it into products that they then sell back to us. That however has changed due to government regulations and trade restrictions. China’s import of our waste has been reduced in the last two years. We are looking at finding other markets, educating our customers and be more careful to clean our waste so that it doesn’t produce more work on the part of the trash company. He also reported that finding new markets for our trash is more costly.
