NOTES FROM AUGUST 16, 2023, MEETING/LUNCHEON
 
Meeting was called to order by:  Gil Garcia, President 2023-24
 
Pledge & Invocation by:  Emiliano Campobello played an ancient wooden flute, a time for meditation.
 
Rotary Sing-along by:  Blas Garza led us in the song “The Yellow Rose of Texas”.
 
Induction of new member
Cathy Calabro, President-Elect & Membership Chair inducted our newest member Emiliano Campobello.  Welcome Emiliano to the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North.
Visiting Rotarians: 
Phil Palquist, honorary member of the Rotary Club of Montecito.  Kim Stone, President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Montecito, also owner of a mobile beverage truck. Harlen Green, our guest speaker, is also a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Montecito. 
 
Visiting Guest: 
This is Lisa Gosdschen 2nd visit to our Rotary Club; she has applied for membership.  Lisa is the Mentor Program Director at the Council on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse.
 
Mayo Villalpando, recent owner of Mayo’s Deli and is now retired.
 
Lovelynn Rey Wills was the guest of Kathy Bazarganan.  Lovelynn is a 16-year-old junior at San Marcos High School.  She is interested in volunteering . . . what about INTERACT?

ROTARY ANNOUNCEMENTS
The annual Santa Barbara/Puerto Vallarta Sister City visitation to Puerto Vallarta is taking place from October 30 thru November 8, 2023.  The Rotary Club of Puerto Vallarta Sur is our Rotary Sister Club.  If you’re interested in going, contact Marti Correa de Garcia at marti@gilgarcia-aia.com or call 805-680-2163
 
The Mental Wellness Center is still interested in clothing, especially men’s clothing.  Henry Duran, our future INTERACT member is working on a clothing drive with the YMCA of Montecito and has been extended to YMCA Santa Barbara.  For more information contact Jacqueline Duran at (805) 284-2037.
 
The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North's Blood Drive is scheduled on September 19th from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, mark your calendars. It will be in the bloodmobile at Community Covenant Church, 5070 Cathedral Oaks Rd. Contact Jim Lisi or Cathy Calabro.
 
PAUL HARRIS AWARDS:
 
Congratulations to the following Rotarian for his many achievements including the Paul Harris award:

MEGA BUCKS:
Steve Young pledged a Mega Buck in honor of his twin grandsons spending 2 weeks with Joan and him.  Next week he will be going to Hawaii (not Maui).
 
Kim Bish pledged two Mega Bucks:  one for his daughter who served at La Casa de Maria Retreat Center; the other one for Maui, where he spent his 2nd honeymoon at various Rotary Club buildings that were destroyed during the Maui wildfires. 
 
Tom Jacobs pledged a Mega Buck for the annual Adams School Beautification Day.  It was Saturday, August 12th, the following Rotarians volunteered:  Jacqueline Duran, Gil Garcia, Marti Correa de Garcia, Dennis Wade and hats-off to Kathy Bazarganan (the Adams School Beautification Day coordinator).
 
Sebastian Aldana Jr. pledged a Mega Buck of $35.00. Honoring the celebration of 33 years of marriage to Norma, his wife.  He donated an extra $2.00 in hopes of adding another two years to his marriage.
 
Blas Garza pledged a two Mega Bucks in honor of his recent 89th birthday…Happy Birthday Blas!
 
John Holehouse pledged a Mega Buck for his recent trip to Lake Constance in Switzerland and England.
 
Gil Garcia pledged a Mega Buck for the miracle that happened at Jim Lisi’s house. 
 
OPPORTUNITY DRAWING
Jim Lisi picked his own ticket and gave The Berry Man gift certificate to guest Lovelynn Rey WillsJohn Holehouse had the opportunity to walk away with a bundle of cash, but unfortunately didn’t pick the “red marble”.  
HONORARY ROTARY MEMBER INDUCTED
Joe Dobbs introducted the newest Honorary Member Don George.  Don joined the Rotary Club of Norwalk in June of 1957, transferring to the Rotary Club of West Covina at te end of 1957 and then transferred to the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North in 1966.  Once he learned the “Service Above Self” creed he was  hooked and blessed.  Some highlights were the year he was President of our club, he gave each member a coin with the 4-Way Test on it.  He attended the rotary International gathering in Brisbane and was awed by the parade of flags ceremony by the youth.

GUEST SPEAKER - HARLAN RUSSELL GREEN
WRITER OF “BUILDING COMMUNIT, Answering Kenney’s Call”
Harlan is a long time Rotarian of the Montecito Rotary Club.  He is a lifelong advocate of livable communities; he was Peace Corps volunteer in a rural community development program in Turkish villages.  He joined the US environmental Protection Agency at its inception to publicize its activities in the Western Region and became a member of Cesar Chavez’s United Farmworkers Union during its organizing struggles, before contributing to his own community planning effort that resulted in a new city. 
He introducted his new book, "BUILDING COMMUNITY - Answering Kennedy's Call" reading sections from it.  His book recently won an award for his good works.
