ANNOUNCEMENTS
Michael Bergquist, President of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North Charitable Foundation is now accepting semi-annual Grant Applications, the deadline for submittals is November 31, 2024. Funding for grants is typically for items that will assist in the running of a non-profit organization. The Board of the Foundation will meet in January 2025 to review all grants and fund the ones that meet the criteria and come within the Charitable Foundation’s allocation budget.
Jim Lisi announced the Board of Directors have eliminated “Rule of 85”. This decision was not made lightly, currently the restaurant we meet at charges for anyone occupying a seat, whether they have lunch or not. Just as a note, Rotary International eliminated “Rule of 85” over 10 years ago, some clubs, including our club choose to keep it.
Jacqualine Duran, chairperson of the Halloween Boo Bash would like to thank sponsors and all that assisted in making this year’s Boo Bash a fun event. She especially wanted to thank Jim Lisi for designing the stand-up banner, Cathy Calabro for working all day at the event, Steve Young and Tim Hardy for judging the kid’s & dog customs and to all the young high school students that came out and helped set up, during the event and break-down.

Cathy Calabro pledged a Mega Buck in honor of 38 years as a Mary Kay representative. She had a holiday open house last weekend selling many Mary Kay gifts to her clients.

Liz Arras, guest visitor, won The Berryman Inc. vegetable/fruit Basket, of course she gave the certificate to Lisa Gosdschan to be used for CADA families for groceries. Gil Garcia won the opportunity to pick the “white” marble and failed, he picked a “red” marble.
GUEST SPEAKERS: Salvation Army
William Booth, the founder of The Salvation Army said “we are a volunteer army” in 1878. As such, The Salvation Army is designed with officers in leadership. Though we started as volunteers over the last 150 years, The Salvation Army has grown into a multinational organization with volunteers, full-time staff and officers that serve those most in need.
Why the Red Kettle? In 1891, Salvation Army Captain joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty stricken. He only had on major hurdle to overcome – funding the project. As he pondered the issue, his remembered is sailor days in Liverpool, England at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle calle4d “Simpson’s Pot” into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor,. Shortly after Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, “Keep the Pot Boiling.” He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas.
The Santa Barbara Salvation Army runs the Hospitality House, providing transitional shelter services for single adult, 189 or over years old. Their services are available without discrimination 24/7/365. This past year they have helped 76 individuals transitioned into safe housing, provided 37,290 meals, provided 12,430 nights of lodging, and 5318 individuals served through their food pantry.
Our guest speakers invited anyone to come and ring the Red Kettle during the holidays.
