On Saturay, June 10th the Santa Barbara Rotary Club Group 8 held a social at the Goleta Historic Train Station. A "chili cook-off" was held, with all nine Rotary Clubs in Santa Barbara/Carpinteria/Goleta entered. Our club had two entries: Alex Duran (Jacqueline Duran's husband) and Marti Correa de Garcia. Alex Duran was the winning chili (HOORAY & CONGRATULATIONS TO ALEX). Cathy Calabro made a batch of her famous chocalate chip cookies.

Katherine Nielsen is the Donor Recruitment Manager for Vatalant. Vitalant is a 501c3 nonprofit blood collection agency. They are the local blood provider for Santa Barbara County. The Central Coast region needs about 200 donors each day to meet the needs of our hospitals. They run about 7 blood drives each day and have 4 fixed site donation centers along the central coast where they collect blood donations. They are currently in need of volunteers and blood donors. As you know Donna Eyman has been a Rotary Member of our club since 2015. She is the owner of Eyman-Parker Insurance Brokers, their main focus is business insurance. Donna gave us a brief update on the rising cost of insurance. In most cases, the recent surge in homeowners’ insurance premiums can be attributed to the inflationary environment or recent natural disasters. Jim Lisi, Chair of the Rotary International Foundation talked about the Rotary International Annual Charitable Giving campaign. Every year the club and its members give to the Rotary Foundation. Joe Lanza, Co-Chair International Projects gave us an up-date on the Kenya water wells. He had a ZOOM meeting with Rotary Club in Kenya and the Greek Church in Tanzania and Santa Barbara. They are working on coming up with a site to drill another water well. Joe also announced that he will be visiting Kenya, Africa in January of 2024. Gil Garcia reported on the great Rotary International Conference he attended in Melbourne, Australia. Lots of activities and information was gathered. Next year’s RI Conference will be in Singapore.

Adams School - I.Madonnari Square
Dennis Waid gave us a brief update on Adams School. The I. Madonnari square we sponsored at the Old Mission turned out to be lovely. A Friday Adams School campus clean-up took place last week, Steve Young and Dennis participated. A beautification day will be held in August, prior to school opening in the Fall, you will be kept informed of the dates.

Gil Garcia pledged a Mega Buck in honor of his 5-year-old granddaughter graduating from Pre-School.
Cathy Calabro pledged a Mega Buck in honor of her son (music director at San Marcos High School) who was nominated for Music Educator of the year.
Jacqueline Duran pledged a Mega Buck honoring the Interact program that her son Henry will be spearheading at San Marcos High School, APPLE Academy.
