IMPACT REPORT
President Gil is hoping to introduce an IMPACT REPORT at various Rotary meetings. Our District 5240 is encouraging Clubs to report programs from each Club that are making a difference locally and globally.
Joe Lanza gave a brief report on the Kenya water wells. This program started in 2008 thanks to the help of Don George and Jim Lisi. The first water well our club was involved in was in 2011. Joe calls it the miracle well because when they started digging in a small village of about 1,000 people in Kenya, they hit an artesian water spring. Our first RI Global Grant was for $20,000, partnering with a Rotary Club in Kenya and Evie Treen’s non-profit. The second water well was drilled in conjunction with an all-girls school that had no electricity, this project was tied to Evie Treen’s non-profit and a local Rotary Club. The cost of this 2018 water well was $40,000 because of the additional cost of solar panels. With connections to Colorado Rotarian Yvonne Pedersen, we met Marlon, a Kenya Africa Rotarian and owner of a water well drilling rig. This time we partnered with the Greek Orthodox Church. Currently Joe is working with Marlon to find another site to drill a water well at the cost of $10,000. Keep up the great work Joe!
Twenty-five (25) kids’ backpacks are being delivered to Adams School. They were donated by the Rotary Club of Goleta.
The Santa Barbara/Puerto Vallarta Sister City Committee announced their Annual Visitation Fundraiser to Puerto Vallarta from October 30 to November 8, 2023. For every Rotarian joining the sojourn, $100 will be donated to the Rotary Club. If you want to use the great airfare cost, a deposit of $300 will be needed by July 31st. Contact Marti Correa de Garcia for more information (805-680-2163).
Cathy Calabro announced the Blood Drive being organized by Jim Lisi and her on September 19, 2023, from 11am-2pm. More information to be published later.
Michael Bergquist, President of the SBN Charitable Foundation announced that the Bi-Annual Board meeting is taking place on Thursday, July 27th at 5:30 pm. All members are invited. The foundation will be reviewing over 15 applications totaling over $37,000, the foundation will be giving out $15,000. Because there was not a quorum at this meeting the Annual Santa Barbara Charitable Foundation meeting will be held at our next meeting/luncheon on August 2, 2023.
To honor one of the RI President’s initiatives, Mental Wellness, our club is asking members to donate their unused clothing to the Mental Wellness Center. They are especially looking for men’s clothing. Thank you, Joe Dobbs, for your clothing donation.
Jacqueline Duran announced that her son, Henry is spearheading his first INTERACT project to help the Wellness Center gather clothing. Above is the flyer he created to be posted at the Montecito YMCA.

Project Heal of Santa Barbara County
Project Heal of Santa Barbara County a 501(c)(3) agency began its journey in 2010 in Tiburon, Ca as Doctors, Nurses and Patients Referral Network (DNPRN) Blog and FB Fan Page which focused on creating awareness on health care literacy, access to healthcare information and helping family, friends and coworkers.
Project Heal of Santa Barbara County gained its 501(c)(3) status in 2014 and began including supportive care services for mental health consumers. We provide peer and advocacy support as well as partner community referrals & resources to those living with mental, chronic and disability challenges. We aspire to eradicate social stigma associated with a mental health diagnosis. We work tirelessly to assist, advocate and empower the medically underserved, low‐income, and vulnerable populations of color by providing them with easy navigation assistance to healthcare services locally and nationally thus reducing barriers to healthcare.
Founded by Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Marie Corbin, APRN (Retired) Project Heal of Santa Barbara County or (PHOSBC) now partners with Behavioral Wellness Committees, SB ACT NNC, Mental Wellness Center Recovery Learning Centers and a host of other community partners, colleges and universities to help bring about a diverse and inclusive outreach awareness project that serves the entire county one community member at a time.
