Virginia Johns
Safety Town of Santa Barbara County
Joe Lanza introduced our speaker, Virginia Johns from Safety Town.
Safety Town is a week-long half-day program for children around five years of age. They teach the kids to be safe and important safety tips. The program was originally taught at La Colina Junior High School but then moved to Goleta Nursery School about 20 years ago. The program started in 1975 and now travels to several locations around Santa Barbara and Goleta. Older students, teenagers, help out at the classes and get community service credits for their help. Each older teen is responsible for two youths. Safety professionals come to Safety Town and give presentations to the young participants. They hear from firefighters, U.S. Forest Service officers, paramedics, police, K-9 teams, the Red Cross, CHP and others. The volunteers construct a miniature town on the playground and students learn how to be safe on the streets. The children get a snack break, with healthy snacks provided between the presentations. This last year they served 500 kids over 8 weeks of program in the summer. The cost is $175 per child.
