HAVE A GREAT & SAFE 4TH OF JULY!

Next club meeting/luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Rusty’s Pizza, 4880 Hollister Ave., Goleta, CA (Turnpike Shopping Center). RYLA & Interact Club of San Marcos High School will be joining us. Come welcome President Cathy Calabro on her first meeting of her 2024-25 term.

Your Board of Directors have changed club meetings to the 2^nd and 4^th Wednesday of the month. Please mark your calendars with the appropriate meeting dates.

June 19, 2024, Luncheon & Meeting

President Gil Garcia called the meeting to order.

Pledge of Allegiance & Invocation by Gil Garcia & glass flute meditation by Emiliano Campobello.

Visiting Rotarians: Heny Duran, co-president of the Interact Club of San Marcos High School.

Visiting Guest: Beatriz Moran, guest of Liza Gosdschan. Christina Kahn, daughter, and guest of Gil Garcia. Margaret Saavedra, President of the Santa Barbara/Puerto Vallarta Sister City Committee, and chair of the City of Santa Barbara Sister City Board (we have seven Sister Cities all over the world), guest of Marti Correa de Garcia.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Mike Bergquist announced a membership meeting of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North Charitable Foundation will be held at the July 10, 2024, meeting/luncheon. Please be prepared to vote on a new Board of Directors.

Cathy Calabro announced Saturday, June 22, 2024, Board of Directors retreat for new Rotary term from 11 am – 2 pm to be held at Garcia Residence.

MEGA BUCKS

Steve Young pledged a mega buck on his Iceland trip.

Mike Bergquist pledged two mega bucks on his recent trip to Normandy & Paris, France.

Cathy Calabro pledged two mega bucks, thanking the club for funding her trip to the Rotary International conference in Singapore . . . it was wonderful, learned a lot about Rotary and very enlightening! She also praised her son who spearheaded the grant from the Santa Barbara School District, $7.3 million is going to the music and theater departments.

Veronica Gallego pledged two mega bucks because she has not been able to make a meeting, traveling for her job. She recently climbed a 6,000 ft. mountain in Utah, just to see a fabulous waterfall. She is so grateful to be working with teachers and children.

Father Larry pledged a mega buck in honor of President Gil Garcia’s 2023-24 Rotary leadership and also for the friendship of Gil & Marti.

OPPORTUNITY DRAWING

The chance to win the jackpot, Patricia Juin picked the red marble, congratulations for winning over $300 in the pot!

STEP DOWN FOR OUTGOING PRESIDENT 2023-24

Past President Jacqueline Duran was the Master of Ceremonies. She called Past President Marti Correa de Garcia up to go over some of Gil’s accomplishments for 2023-24.

PRESIDENT GIL GARCIA’S 2024-25 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

CLUB SERVICE:

Supported a local Blood Drive.
Recruited several new members, young members that lowered the age group: Emiliano Campobello, Lisa Gosdschan, Maria Garcia & Lisa Biggs.
Honorary members: Don George & Terry Straehley.
Introduction of flute invocations by Emiliano Campobello.

FUNDRAISING:

Supported Elubia’s Kitchen Fiesta Booth at de la Guerra Plaza, received a donation of $800.
First Annual Halloween Boo-Bash Fun Family Fest event.
Holiday auction that raised money for our projects. . . getting back in the grove after Covid-19.

YOUTH PROJECTS:

Supported the Santa Barbara County Architectural Design Completion for High School students in the amount of $600.
Supported the Santa Barbara Sister Cities Young artist showcase with a donation of $250.
Held a successful RYLA program with 4 young high school students.
Held another successful 4-Way Essay Test, honoring 3 students from Adams School with monetary awards.
Start of the mural project at Adams School, to be finished during incoming President Cathy Calabro’s 2024-25 term.
Supported the start of an Interact Club at San Marcos High School
Continued to support Adams School projects.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS:

Continued to support the Kenya water wells, committee held a successful fundraiser “Make the Impossible Happen” magic show.
Supported Puerto Vallarta projects through the Rotary North Charitable Foundation.

COOPERATION WITH OTHER GROUPS:

Supported Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise Global Grant funding for a Tilapia Fish & Vegetable Farm in Central America.
Supported one of the themes of the 2023-24 Rotary International President, Wellness. Held a dinner at the Wellness Center in cooperation with SB/PV Sister City Committee. Raised over $6,500 dollars.

CONFERENCES:

Four members from our club attended the Rotary International conference in Singapore this year.
Two members attended Rotary District 5240 conference in Bakersfield.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION:

Paul Harris Fellows presented during his term: Kim Bish, Tim Hardy, Marti Correa de Garcia, Gil Garcia, Roberto Najera, Mike Bergquist, Steve Young, John Engstrom, Joe Dobbs, Kathy Bazarganan, Cathy Calabro, Maria Garcia, Guy de Mangeon and Jim Lisi.

HANDING OVER THE GAVEL

Gil thanked his Board of Directors and Rotary members for all their support. We can be proud of all our 2023-2024 Rotary Year accomplishments, we can be proud for the joy it brought to many people locally and abroad that received the fruits of our service above self joyous labor. Throughout my childhood, service has been an extremely important virtue to me. Service not only helps other people, but it also satisfies me knowing I positively impacted someone else's life. Seeing other people who are less fortunate than I, can be heart-wrenching but knowing I can help them, comforts me. To me, one of the most important aspects of living is helping those who are in need also live their life to the fullest. Everyone deserves to be living comfortably and that is why I believe it is our job, as people who are blessed with more than enough, to help those who are less fortunate.
