Announcements (include contact info if response indicated):
-Ken attended the “Group of Eight” Rotary Presidents’ meeting this past Monday, which has decided to put on a Rotary inter-club mixer at the Manuscript Museum hopefully sometime in the next couple of months – date TBD.
-Next week’s (9/20) speaker will be Kelly Fresch, the new principal of Adams Elementary School
-The recipient of the Paul Harris scholarship is Ernestina Angel to be presented next week
- Water Project committee report from Joe Lanza:
Rotary International has transferred $44,000 to Kenya, and drilling is scheduled to commence Friday 9/22. The geologist is also on the way and expected to arrive either Friday or Saturday.
The next task ahead is to create a video, and it would be nice if we could come up with $2,000 or so to help make the video professionally (so if anyone happens to ‘know a guy/gal’….), however the current plan is to create a video similar to the one from last year.
A large donation of $50,000 was given to help with the dormitory that is on-site with the school, which is gives a huge boost and brings the project closer to its funding goal.

MegaBucks:
-Fred Allen gave 2 megabucks, one for his almost 4-month trip to Western France, and the second for finding out while in France that his son can actually speak French fluently (I guess all those high school and college French classes paid off!).
-Tom Jacobs gave 1 megabuck for his own ‘recent travel’…in this case over his bicycle handlebars resulting in a broken collarbone. However, since he was wearing his helmet, he’s able to be here today to tell the tale (a lesson we should all take to heart).
-Roberto Najera gave 4 megabucks for Hurricane Irma relief.
-Bruce Micheel gave 4 megabucks as well for Hurricane Irma relief. He spoke about seeing a picture of a hurricane-ravaged house down in Florida and realizing it is the same one his family had been renting annually for the past 15 years.
-Ken mentioned that the club will be collecting funds for Hurricane Harvey (and now including Hurricane Irma) relief through the Rotary Foundation (see last week’s meeting minutes for info on how to make out your checks and where to send them).
-Dennis Boneck gave 1 megabuck to recognize the Santa Barbara Yacht Club’s event last weekend, the 13th annual Charity Regatta, which raised over $132,000 for Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care!

Santa Barbara City Councilman Frank Hotchkiss

Tim Bigelow introduced our meeting’s featured speaker: Santa Barbara City Councilman Frank Hotchkiss, who is running in the upcoming 2017 Santa Barbara mayoral race. After attending Yale University, Mr. Hotchkiss served as a Naval officer in Vietnam as a River Patrol Boat commander. After he returned stateside, he resumed his acting career in theater followed by roles in both film and television. He then worked as a journalist and writer for many years, followed by a 15-year tenure as the head of a public relations firm.

He has been on the City Council since 2009 and has been an outspoken advocate for a variety of issues impacting Santa Barbara, including: moving RVs off of Cabrillo Boulevard, preventing installation of parking meters in the downtown area, opposing development of the Douglas Family Preserve, increasing the number of cruise ship visits, and continuing the tradition of the State Street Christmas Tree. Councilman Hotchkiss lauded the wonderful aspects of Santa Barbara and believes it is the pre-eminent small city in America.
He spoke to the group about a variety of issues that the city is currently dealing with, and touched on some of the ways he would approach them if elected as mayor.

There were quite a few questions posed by the group, touching on a variety of issues from infrastructure funding to panhandling, which made for a good session between speaker and audience. As is the chapter custom, after his talk our speaker left an inscription in a book to be donated to the Adams Elementary School library.

Thank you Councilman Hotchkiss!
