CLUB MEETING NOTES- September 06, 2023, at Mulligan’s Cafe

Rotary Sing-alongBlas Garza led us in “On, Wisconsin” fight song of the Wisconsin Badgers of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
 
Visiting RotariansYvonne Pedersen, Event Planner, Goleta Evening Club.  Phil Palmquist retired CPA and Honorary Rotarian of the Montecito Rotary Club. 
 
Visiting Guest:  Diva Johnson works for Fertile Hopes, supporting cancer survivors by creating a new future.  Lisa Biggs is Director of Outreach for Fusion Academy; she is very interested in joining our Rotary Club (Yay!). Ciriaca Yolanda Sabio is a health coach for various companies, her company is WiseNFit2.  All three guest were invited by our membership chair, Cathy Calabro.
 
PROPOSED COMMUNITY EVENT
PRESENTED BY EVENT PLANNER YVONNE PEDERSEN:
HALLOWEEN BOO Bash a Family Fun event.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 28, 2023.  This event will be held from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Chase Palm Park, Great Meadows.   Fun for the entire family, including kids, grandkids and family dog.  Old fashion games, dog agility demonstrations, K-9 presentation and costume contest for kids and dogs. Participation by all Rotarians is encouraged, find a sponsor, volunteer or donate direct.  The following Rotary members donated on the spot:

  • Duran Capital Management ($1000)

People of Action - Rotarians:     
“Rotary members share a unique passion for taking action to improve their communities and the world”.  President Gil wanted to honor the following Rotarians for their contribution to community and world:
  • Terry Straehley & Patricia not only support our local projects and Rotary International but also have been supporting 4 students in Puerto Vallarta with scholarships.  One student recently graduated from the University and was so appreciative of Terry & Pat’s support.
  • Michael Bergquist is the President of our Charitable Foundation, Jennifer and Mike also support 2 students in Puerto Vallarta with scholarships.  
  • Jacqueline Duran supports many local Rotary projects and Alex and Jacqueline also support 1 student in Puerto Vallarta with a scholarship.
  • Marti Correa de Garcia is proud to support Rotary projects locally and Gil and Marti support 1 student in Puerto Vallarta with a scholarship.
NEW MEMBER ROTARY INDUCTION
 
Our Rotary Club is proud to welcome Lisa Gosdchan to our ranks.  Lisa was installed by Joe Lanza, her Rotary sponsor.  Lisa is the Mentor Program Director at Council on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse.  She promised to give of her time as a volunteer to club activities. Welcome Lisa to the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North!
PAUL HARRIS FELLOW
John Engstrom, a Rotarian since 1964, joined our club in 2007 when he moved to Santa Barbara.  John was honored with a Paul Harris pin displaying 3 red stones ( Red-stone Multiple Paul Harris Fellow pins were introduced in 1988 to bridge the gap between the blue five-stone pin and Major Donor recognition levels).  Congratulations to John for his many years of dedication to Rotary.
ANNOUNCMENTS
Jacqueline Duran announced that her son Henry a new Interact Rotarian is still collecting men’s clothing to donate to the Mental Wellness Center.  Donation boxes are now at the Montecito YMCA.
 
Cathy Calabro announced that next Wednesday, September 13th is Mary Kay’s 60thanniversary and “Beauty for a Cause” event will be held at the home of Marti Correa de Garcia.  A percentage of proceeds will go to ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease).  If your female spouse would like to attend, call Cathy at 805-895-7238.
 
Don’t forget the Rotary Club Santa Barbara North BLOOD DRIVE on Tuesday, September 19TH from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm at Community Covenant Church, 5070 Cathedral Oaks Rd.
 
MEGA BUCKS
Tom Jacobs pledged a Mega Buck in honor of his birthday.  Happy Birthday Tom!

Father Larry pledged a Mega Buck honoring our new Rotary member Lisa Gosdchan.
 
Cathy Calabro pledged a Mega Buck in honor of Jim Lisi allowing her to go to the Community Prayer Breakfast last week.
 
Jim Lisi pledged a Mega Buck for his guest Phil Palmquist, a potential member of our Rotary Club.
 
OPPORTUNITY DRAWING
Thank you Anthony Clark for selling tickets for the Opportunity Drawing. Tom Jacobs won The Berry Man Inc. certificate.  John Holehouse won the chance to pick the “white” marble, but he didn't pick the winning marble.
 
GUEST SPEAKER
JULIE POLLARD, Co-Founder/Chief Operations Officer  Ageless Fitness
Julie co-founded the Ageless Fitness program in 2018. Julie has her Masters degree in Gerontology and longevity sciences from the University of Southern California. She received her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She is an ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist with an expertise in prescribing exercise to individuals with a variety of needs, goals, and accommodations. Julie is a specialist in older adult populations and adapted physical activity programs. 

Her passion for people drove her into the field of preventative health and wellness. Julie values evidence-based practice, holistic health, careful instruction, and intergenerational friendships. She believes exercise should be effective and fun! 
 
Did you know it is recommended that adults aged 65 and older need: At least 150 minutes a week (for example, 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) of moderate-intensity activity such as brisk walking. Or they need 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity such as hiking, jogging, or running.
