Quote of the Day:
"We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can to is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our Attitudes."
                                                         -Charles R. Swindoll

Program Information:
Terry Straehley introduced our speaker, Mike Eliason, Public Information Officer for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. Mike described how the Santa Barbara Fire Department public information officer's job is to essentially be the first responders' spokesperson. He describes what is happening, documents with pictures that he takes what is occurring at the moment, what is being done, and lastly what is the plan in proceeding forward. He presented pictures that he took of the Thomas Fire and of the rescue activities following the mud flow. The Thomas fire was unusual in that started in December, was the largest fire in California history by acreage and required more resources (8500 firefighters) and equipment than any other fire in California's history. There were 104,000 people evacuated and 1,000 structures damaged or destroyed. Every search and rescue team in California was utilized and there were 130 hoist rescues by helicopter immediately after the mud flow because trucks and rescue vehicles could not reach areas affected.
