Jim Lisi, RI Foundation Director, reported that we are $1,300 short of our annual giving goal to The Rotary Foundation. Donations received by TRF before June 30 will count toward President Guy's term. He also announced that our Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North Charitable Foundation is looking for contributors. To prevent being forced to report as a private charity (RCSBNF is public), we need more people contributing. The amount is not as important as giving something this year. This makes it possible to keep our public non-profit status and also to give more grants in the Santa Barbara area. Mail your contribution to: P.O. BOX 3293, Santa Barbara, CA 93130.

SPEAKER – Pat McElroy
Prior to Mr. McElroy’s presentation he was presented a Paul Harris Fellow by Jim Lisi. This Paul Harris Fellow honor was given to Pat by our club several years ago but the certificate and pin was found in our files a few months ago.
Pat McElroy spent 37 years with the Santa Barbara City Fire Department, the final five years he served as Fire Chief. He was the leader of the City Fire Political Action Committee for 20 years and served as the President of the Santa Barbara County Fire Chiefs Association. He also served as Liaison Officer for a United State Forest Service Type 1 Incident Management Team for ten years. In 2016 he was named a Santa Barbara Local Hero for his efforts in reforming California’s 911 Cellphone service. Currently, he serves as Executive Director of The Partnership for Resilient Communities which was formed after the 2018 Debris Flows in Santa Barbara County.
He received his B.A. in Anthropology from UC Santa Barbara. He lives in Santa Barbara with his wife Bonnie Kerwin, a longtime Early Childhood Educator, who is currently Assistant Director of Starr-King Parent Child Workshop. They have three adult children.
When Pat announced his retirement 100 days prior to the date, one day before his retirement date the January 2018 a series of mudflows occurred in Southern California particularly affecting areas northwest of Montecito in Santa Barbara County. The incident was responsible for 23 deaths, although the body of one of the victims has never been found. The Montecito debris flows that occurred in were the result of a rare confluence of two uncommonly severe events: the Thomas Fire—at that time the largest wildfire in California history—which for weeks burned through Ventura and Santa Barbara counties; and the intense winter storm that followed.
In southern California, as little as 0.3 inches of rainfall in 30 minutes has triggered debris flows, and any storm that has intensities greater than about 0.4 inches/hour is at risk of producing debris flows. Where is debris flow located? They occur in a wide variety of environments throughout the world, including all 50 states and U.S. Territories. Debris flows generally occur during periods of intense rainfall or rapid snowmelt and usually start on hillsides or mountains.
The deadly Montecito debris flow was a rare event, but could happen again.
A very interesting topic, thank you Pat McElroy!
RAFFLE WINNER:
Anthony Clark presented the Berryman certificate to Barry Shulman.
Cathy Calabro won a chance to pick the “red” marble . . . unfortunately she picked a “white” marble. To-date the pot of money is $270.
