Jacqueline Duran announced that our Interact Club from San Marcos High School headed by her son Henry Duran delivered boxes of slightly used clothing to the Mental Wellness Center donated by members of the Montecito YMCA.
Cathy Calabro re-announced the “WALK to END ALZHEIMER’S” scheduled Saturday, October 14th at Playa Stadium. Visit their webpage at www.alz.org/santabarbarwalk for more information or talk to Cathy who is one of the team leaders.
Jim Lisi announced an October 14th event at All Saints by the Sea at 3:30 pm. This is a free event to earn more about sex trafficking of minors in Santa Barbara. Sally Cook, Co-Founder of Hope Refuge will share her story and how you can be a part of ending this terrible crime.
Joe Lanza reported on the Kenya Water Wells. He is working on a new well with the Greek Church and Rotarians in Kenya. The cost of drilling has increased from previous years but fortunately our Rotary Club has some saved funds but will still need additional money to finish these new wells.
Joe also announced about a 3-week African tour scheduled for next year. If you are interested, please contact Mr. Lanza.
Marti Correa de Garcia announced the Santa Barbara/Puerto Vallarta Sister City “Cruise for a Cause” to Benefit Puerto Vallarta families and Kid’s with Cancer. Please note: the cruise has been moved to Friday October 26th it will be a Sunset-Cruise. If you are interested, please call Marti.
Gil Garcia announced more information on the Rotary Club SBN Halloween Boo Bash Fall Family Festival scheduled for Saturday, October 28th. PLEASE sign-up as a volunteer!
MEGA BUCKS
Cathy Calabro pledged a Mega Buck because she attended her first President-Elect training program in San Luis Obispo. She learned a lot, one of the things that was a surprise is that Rotary International has a seat in the United Nations.
Mike Berquist pledged a couple of Mega Bucks in honor of the recent trip Jennifer, and he took to Queretaro, Mexico to attend their Mexican niece’s wedding. In attendance were over 400 guests, wedding started at 8:00 PM and ended the next morning at 6:00 AM (of course Mike & Jennifer didn’t stay the entire time).
Gil Garcia pledged a Mega Buck honoring the Puerto Vallarta Rotary scholarship student he met during his visit to Puerto Vallarta a few weeks ago. Marti and Gil were present during the scholarship presentation and met each of the recipients. The following Rotary members support student scholarships: Jacqueline & Alex Duran, Gil & Marti Garcia, Terry & Patricia Straehley (4 scholarships), Michael & Jennifer Bergquist (2 scholarships).

GUEST SPEAKER & CRAFT TALK – LISA GOSDSCHAN
Lisa is the Mentor Program Director for the Council on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse (CADA). She is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and worked for Hughes Airospace for many years.
The Mentor Program is a prevention program that uses positive interaction and support to deter problematic behaviors in local at-risk youth. The program matches caring adult volunteers with youth ages third through eighth grade enrolled in the Goleta, Santa Barbara and Carpinteria school districts. Mentors encourage personal growth, self-esteem, academic performance, and healthy family dynamics. The program has demonstrated strong success at deterring risky behaviors and promoting positive behaviors of Mentees, who are referred to CADA by school counselors, psychologists, and other school administrators. Family members can also request a referral to the Mentor Program from their child’s school. More information: https://cadasb.org/youth-mentor/
