President-Elect Guy de Mangeon called the meeting to order, welcoming all Rotarians and guest in attendance. Tom Jacobs led us in the pledge of allegiance and a short invocation.  John Engstrom led us in the singing of God Bless America.

Dr. Smith is a family medicine physician who has worked in primary care clinics in low-income communities in the United States and Central America for 3 decades.  Due to coronavirus most recently she has worked in the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department clinic in Santa Maria.  In all settings, she has also been involved in health and social justice efforts to complement her clinical work.

 

Dr. Smith is also the Chair of Expert Health Care Panel for the RISE Guide to reopening Santa Barbara County and Interim Coordinator, Latinx and Indigenous COVID-19 Response Task Force.  Her talk was on the Latinx and Indigenous Migrant COVID-19 Response Task Force, a cross-sectoral county-wide collaboration to address the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on these communities.  Conditions in the environment in which people are born, live, learn, work and play affect a wider range of health, functioning and quality of life outcomes and risks. Many of these people are essential workers, on the frontline and cannot shelter in place.  Nationally, Black and Asian Pacific Islander communities are also disproportionately impacted by this pandemic.

 

The Task Force has a rapid response to community needs and priorities.  They meet bimonthly, including Task Force partners and the Public Health Department.  Bimonthly Working Group meeting and strategy sessions to respond to urgent priorities.

During the question and answer period, several Rotary members asked questions.  Stanley Weinstein was curious when elementary schools would reopen and because he and others from our Rotary Club volunteer at Adams School, when would it be safe for these volunteers to go back and help at the school?  Dr. Ronda Gordon suggest it is up to each families needs in determining if their child can learn on-line or if they have an kind of disability, in-person learning might be a better fit.  Kindergarten, pre-school, 1^st and 2^nd grades have a harder time with on-line learning.  In regard to volunteers, it’s also up to the individual, but remember hand washing, mask wearing and social distancing is a must.

 

Dr. Dan advice was to support public health, science and medical groups.
