Back at the Music Academy to Learn All About Bees
Back at the Music Academy to Learn All About Bees

Nicholas Wigle began his career in beekeeping in 2009. He is viewed as an expert in the field — being called to remove feral honeybees from attics, walls, and landscapes.

Nicholas’s company, Super Bee Rescue, removes hundreds of feral hives per year. The team cares for over 500 colonies, performs 800 rescues per year, and maintains 80 bee apiaries. His team provides beekeeping consulting in Santa Barbara County, CA.

Nicholas graduated from Cal State Northridge with a degree in Business and Economics, and received his Master Beekeeping Certificate from the University of Montana.

Dear Friends,

For our September 1 meeting we’ll be back at our Rotary home, the Music Academy of the West. It’s a lovely place and its spaces work well for us. What’s more, the staff is terrific to work with, always accommodating. How fortunate we are!

If you want to attend one of our meetings, however, you have to know how to find us, as the Music Academy is well off of Montecito’s main roads. While that’s part of its charm, it does mean that we, members of this Rotary Club, need to go out of our way to invite guests and make them feel welcome. Who might this friend, neighbor, co-worker, random-person-in-the-checkout-line be?

This Tuesday’s meeting will be fun. Nick Wigle of Super Bee Rescue will bring us up to speed on these remarkable creatures—and he has stories to tell! (I have my own, which I’ll share briefly. Let’s just say that Super Bee Rescue likely kept me out of the ER.)

Do let me know if you’re bringing a guest so I have enough treats ready. Yum.

Peter

This year's SB Yacht Club Charity Regatta supports VNA Health, an organization who has generously lent us meeting space in the past. Now we have a chance to return the favor by providing volunteer support for their fundraising event.

VNA Health has requested assistance setting up before the event and tearing down after it ends, so there are opportunities on both a morning and evening shift.  No heavy lifting required.

The Regatta will be held Saturday, September 12th. If you can volunteer, please contact Tony Morris at:

tonymorrisca@gmail.com

You can also support by attending the event. Click here to access their website for additional information.

Hope to see you there!

Food Bank Tour

Cindy Velazquez, Community Programs Coordinator for the Santa Barbara County Food Bank explains their nutrition education program

On August 18th, we met in Goleta at the headquarters of the Santa Barbara County Food Bank.  We were greeted by Alissa Millar, Community Engagement Coordinator, and Cindy Velazquez, North County Community Programs Coordinator, then taken on an extensive tour of the new facilities.  Highlights included a model grocery store used to teach food nutrition, a portable kitchen that supports outreach to high school students, the huge food storage warehouse, and a gigantic composter.

Over lunch in the volunteer “hive” we learned about multiple opportunities for service. I suspect we will be returning to the center soon for a service project.
