for SBCC Students in Vocational Programs

Our club has been awarding scholarships to deserving SBCC students for more than 25 years, and the Scholarship Awards Celebration is one of the highlights of our club calendar.

This year we'll gather in person at the John Dunn Gourmet Dining Room on the SBCC campus for presentation of our annual vocational scholarship awards.

If you plan to attend, please consider carpooling as parking at the SBCC campus is extremely limited.

President's Message
Dear Fellow Rotarians,

I'm a perpetual student; I'm always learning something either from experiences and/or meeting new people. So, you can imagine that one of my favorite meetings of the Rotary Club of Montecito is the annual Santa Barbara City College Student Scholarship Luncheon.

I'm excited that our organization - through club and individual sponsored scholarships - will be recognizing our next group of vocational honorees on Tuesday, April 18 on campus. RSVPs were required for this event.

In other "student" news, Karen Hickman, who serves as our RYLA Coordinator, and I recently met with two of our high school representatives, Harry Hayman and Lola Sage, who will be attending the conference this week in Ojai.

As always, thanks so much for all you support. We have a great club!

Yours in Service,
Tony

RYLA Students Selected
President Tony and Karen Hickman pose with RYLA candidates Lola Sage and Harry Hayman.

Kudos to Karen Hickman for recruiting two deserving high school students to attend District 5240's Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) for 2023, located in the beautiful hills of Ojai at Camp Ramah.

Each year all participating clubs in District 5240 select ambassadors to represent them at a 4-day, all expenses paid retreat designed by Rotarians to teach and promote the leadership skills necessary to make change through service to humanity locally and worldwide.

RYLA offers courses not often found in standard high school curriculum. These courses include diversity training, public speaking, team building, goal setting, leading a meeting, and character & ethics. The retreat offers a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, plus talented keynote speakers who inspire our youth to become great leaders and to do great things.

The weekend culminates in an award ceremony for all students. It's inspiring to witness the growth of these students over the course of this world class retreat. They all leave with new tools to draw on for the rest of their lives in school, work, charity, and family life.
