Service Projects

Meet at the Cabrillo West Parking lot (Corona Del Mar @ Cabrillo Blvd.) at 5:00 PM on Tuesday August 11th. Feel free to drop by as time permits; we’ll be picking up trash until about 6:00 PM, then relaxing and enjoying some in-person socializing.
Please register here, so we'll know how many people to expect. And don't forget to invite friends and family. This is a great project for service-minded citizens of all ages. Hope to see you all there!
*Bring your mask as well as a bucket for the trash pickup (if you have one available). We'll provide gloves & trash bags.
We have two volunteer service opportunities on Tuesday, September 8th
We'll be working at the Salvation Army packing food for delivery to local families in need.  Some tasks require heavy lifting, but there are less strenuous jobs that can be performed sitting down.
Each session is 3 hours long.  Click on your preferred option for details and to sign up.
To learn more about services provided by the Salvation Army, visit their website.
This year, Walk to End Alzheimer’s is everywhere — on every sidewalk, track and trail — with small teams instead of a large in-person gathering.
The Santa Barbara Rotaract Club is organizing a team and inviting all local Rotarians to join.  We'll provide additional detail as the event date approaches, but register now to reserve your spot and show support for our SB Rotaractors.
There are ongoing opportunities to volunteer at our local food bank, with shifts available for driving/delivery, sorting and packing in both the south and north county. Visit the Volunteer Hub to sign up.

President's Message
Dear Friends,
As you know, Rotary doesn’t take the summer off. We’ve been busy! In July alone we convened a Club assembly to discuss the 2020-21 goals, speaker Kevin Davis shared what’s going on at Amazon Alexa in Santa Barbara, and we volunteered at Care4Paws and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. And on July 28th, the Club Board approved two new members: spouses Jason Blakemore (Anita) and Peter Buehler (Kati).
At our meeting this Tuesday, we will host our Rotary District Governor Deb Linden. Deb will give us a District update and honor two of our members with special awards. She will also present Paul Harris Fellow awards to Todd Aldrich, Anita Blakemore, Lora Fisher and Kerri Murray, in recognition of their contributions to The Rotary Foundation. This will be a wonderful opportunity to recognize some special people in our Club!
See you Tuesday,

Grant Applications Online Now

Applications are available now for our 2020 Community Grants Program. This year we're debuting an online form for ease of application.  Thanks to John Lucchetti and Susan Hersberger for their help in making that happen!

Look for the application and details about the grants on the Our Foundation page of the club website.  Applications are due September 15 for the grants which range from $1,000 - $1,500.

Each application must have a Rotarian sponsor, so you play a vital role in soliciting and sponsoring applications from local nonprofits you support.

Fellowship and Fun
This week's Mask-querade was a great success!  The small group of registered attendees was able to meet in person while maintaining appropriate social distance.
Thanks to our social committee, Liz Westwick, Anita Blakemore & Tony Morris, for organizing.  Liz & Anita cooked up a delicious array of appetizers, pizzas and dessert, but I think the highlight may have been the specialty cocktails created by Liz's husband John.
ReStore Work Day
Our recent work day at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore was a do-it-yourselfer's dream. In addition to exploring aisles of appliances, electrical equipment, tile & plumbing fixtures, volunteers were able to take home any items being removed from inventory.
Lora Fisher coordinated the event, then put on her work gloves to help haul merchandise along with her husband Tom Fisher, and club members Gary Hopkins & Bernadette Bagley.
C.A.R.E 4 Paws Service
Anita Blakemore organized two volunteer sessions to help out C.A.R.E. 4 Paws.  Turnout was great with a dozen volunteers participating across the two days, including our most recent applicants for family membership, Jason Blakemore and Peter Buehler (pictured below).
We packaged an impressive amount of pet food in the hour allotted, aided no doubt by the danceable ABBA tunes playing in the background.
Rotary Radio Interview
On July 20, 2020 host Ed Giron interviewed Club President Kati Buehler on his weekly "Community Matters" radio show on AM 1290.
Kati discussed a wide variety of Rotary topics including Rotary's local and worldwide COVID-19 relief efforts, the Club's fundraising efforts for annual scholarships to SBCC students, the Club Foundation's community grants program, and the planned "Bike and Hike to End Polio" event which raises funds for polio immunization across the globe and culminates with a celebration of World Polio Day on October 24, 2020.
