Dear Rotarians,

Wow, January sure flew by! The days are getting longer, and it’s nice to finally have a little more light in the evenings.

A big thank you to everyone who stepped up for the fire relief efforts. Whether you donated, volunteered, or helped spread the word, it really makes a difference. Rotary is all about showing up when our community needs us, and you all did just that.

I also want to give a special shout-out to Karen Hickman for all her work in selecting outstanding high school students for RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). RYLA is an incredible program that gives young leaders the chance to grow, connect, and develop skills that will serve them for a lifetime. We had so many great students apply this year that we were able to send three from our alternate list over to the Santa Barbara Rotary Club, which needed a few more participants. Win-win!

And finally, mark your calendars for next Tuesday.  We have Lisa Amador from Amador Matchmaking joining us. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, she’s going to share some fun insights into the world of modern matchmaking. Should be a great talk!

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Popular Author's Latest Book
Hendrika De Vries, author of Open Turns

We enjoyed a new presentation by a repeat author at our meeting on January 21st.  Following the success of her first book, When a Toy Dog Became a Wolf and the Moon Broke Curfew, Hendrika was encouraged to expand on her life story by describing her early adulthood in Australia.  Her latest work, Open Turns, focuses on the challenges of the immigrant experience and the lessons she took from competitive swimming.

Henrika's presentation highlighted the themes of the new book and the research done to ensure the accuracy of her account.  Open Turns will be officially released in September, so add it to your list for fall reading.
