State Street Revitalization
State Street Revitalization

Mr. Conklin is one of California’s leading advocates for effective government at the community level. He has served in multiple leadership roles including: Mayor and City Council Member of the City of Santa Barbara for 18 years, President of the California League of Cities in Sacramento, and Vice President of the National League of Cities in Washington DC. He founded the California Civic Leadership Institute and has provided training for hundreds of local elected leaders nationwide and internationally over the last 40 years.

Mr. Conklin spearheaded the development of Santa Barbara’s “Cultural District” including the restoration of Santa Barbara’s historic Stearns Wharf and the Arlington and Granada Theaters, a “downtown retail restoration plan” that included the Paseo Nuevo Retail Center, a nightclub district on lower State Street, and the revitalization of the waterfront and the expansion of Chase Palm Park.

Mr. Conklin serves on numerous community, state, and national non-profit boards focused on civic engagement, the arts, and environmental protection. He is the denominational Chairman of the Board of Administration for the Free Methodist Church in the United States. He is also the co-author of Cinema in Focus, a weekly syndicated film commentary distributed worldwide.

Mr. Conklin is blissfully married to Haley (McGuire) Conklin, and they live at the beach on the Santa Barbara Mesa. They have seven grown children and eleven grandchildren.

ShelterBox Event Raises Funds for Those Displaced by Disaster or Conflict

Rotarians at ShelterBox event

Rotarians attending the ShelterBox event in Summerland

On September 20, about 250 people turned out for ShelterBox USA’s second annual Evening to Experience ShelterBox on the scenic grounds of John McGovern’s Summerland estate. More than $225,000 was raised for this international disaster relief organization, which provides ShelterBoxes, ShelterKits, and other supplies to those displaced by conflict or disaster. ShelterBoxes contain tents for temporary shelter and ShelterKits provide the essential tools for repairing and rebuilding homes.

Is it YOUR turn to serve our Club?

We are actively seeking volunteers to participate in the very important process of selecting our Club's future leader.  This year, the Nominating Committee will be made up of Three Past Presidents and Two members-at-large.

WHY:  Help ensure the on-going vitality and energy of our Club by helping to select our future leadership.

WHAT:  Minimal time commitment, other than occasional meetings as scheduled by the Committee.

WHEN: Starting now, with work to be completed by December 1.

WHY NOT: If you're on the Nominating Committee, you cannot be tapped to serve as President! ;)

If those aren't reasons enough, then please contact President Todd to be considered for appointment no later then Tuesday, 10/9.

And of course, if you'd like to help us short-cut this effort and step-up to serve as President, LET'S TALK!
