The more I think about it, the more I appreciate the third question of Rotary’s 4-Way Test: Will it build goodwill and better friendships? To be motivated by opportunities to be helpful and make new friends, this is a good test for what we think, say, and do.
We often talk about doing good, here in our community and around the world. But the good isn’t only in the doing, it’s also in the relationships that are developed between people who were strangers one minute and friends the next.
At our International Convention in Taipei this past June, during a crosstown train trip, I met a Rotarian from Holland, living in Ghana; another Rotarian from Malawi; and still another from Clarksburg, California with whom I had mutual friends. What an absolute delight to experience such friendship.
Nick Wigle explains the challenges of bee rescue and removal
Nick Wigle, owner of Super Bee Rescue and Removal, gave an outstanding presentation on the business of bees. In addition to educating us about bees in general, Nick shared anecdotes about unique bee removal operations, and answered questions about Africanized/spicy bees, honey, and expanding his small business.
Of particular interest was his explanation of their bee foster program that allows landowners to host bee boxes that are maintained by Bee Rescue and Removal staff. It seems we may even have a Rotarian or two that's thinking about signing up. Yet another way we can give back to our community.
Nick introduces Rotarians Roger Davis, Debbie Merlo, Kurt Koenig, and Harlan Green to his big box of bees.
