             President Evans introduced Moyes Muguira: Cal Poly senior in business; 13 years in youth programs; last three years as the Exec Dir for the Boys & Girls Club in Oceano.

     

 

               Hispresentation focused on developing a new crew of volunteers who will serve as mentors, assist in creating a positive environment for the kids and a high requirement is having a healthy and positive attitude towards the kids; someone the kids will want to emulate, listen to and relate to.  He said that children who have positive mentors will be 46% less likely to use drugs; 27% less likely to use alcohol; 53% less likely to skip school; and 33% less likely to engage in school violence.  He said that kids fight more now than they ever have before. 

             The Club offers the following volunteer sites: The Teen Center in Oceano, GroverHeightsElementary School, OceanoElementary School and JudkinsJunior High School.  They have 2,719 kids involved in their programs and between 600 and 700 kids at these sites every day.  The Teen Program consists of kids 12-18 years old; 98% of whom are Hispanic descent.  There mission is to help them grow healthy, gain self confidence, all in a safe environment.  They emphasize developing team building skills; offer physical obstacle courses that help build team work skills and self confidence; field trips such as hiking, camping, visiting college campuses, swimming; Moyses is proud of their triathlon program, a swim, bike, run competition offered to non athletes.  It is good exercise, reduces obesity problems and builds self esteem; there is a sports day where they play soccer, war ball baseball, basketball, etc; a cook and eat program that teaches cooking skills, measurement, money management and introduces new food and tastes.  It also teaches how to serve and how to behave at the table.  Their Bright Futures program is the most diversified that includes art, games, design, fashion, leadership, field hockey and Wii tournaments.
