Past DG Nick Frankle was our guest speaker on October 17.  He shared with us what it takes to be a Peace Builder Club and wants us to consider becoming a peace builder club.  Becoming a peace builder is simply a club that promotes the Rotary Peace Fellowship,  Engages in Peace Education and apply the peace principles to our service projects.   A peace club would have to appoint a peace chair and hold a club program about peace education.

Copy of Lettie Fuller shares her East Coast Sailing Trip

story-thumbnail
Lettie started sailing in 2005, mostly due to her sister and brother-in-law were into sailing.  Their first trip was in Belize,  Lettie and her husband were asked to provision the boat as her sister was delayed,  so knowing nothing they proceed to got to the different markets to order supplies, which were delivered  to the ship.  In 2008  sailing lessons were begun to prepare for a  trip to the Caribbean.

There is alot to learn to go sailing on the ocean,  but most important is to respect the ocean.  This trip took about a year to plan with 21 people going on the trip.  They rented 4 boats and set off from Rhode Island Sound and Nantucket Sound.  They saw land the entire time, they would cruise during the day and anchor at night.  They had all levels of sailors with their group from the San Luis Yacht Club and traveled 217 nautical miles averaging 9 knots (about 12 mph).  Currently they are planning a Mexico trip for next year.  Lettie has a 38 ft catamaran moored in Santa Barbara.

Ron Brown filled in as a last minute speaker with his craft talk.

story-thumbnail
Ron Brown shared with us about his love of technology that started at a very young age.  In 2nd grade he was introduced to the computer and it was his goal to break it apart and see how it worked.  Ron's original goal was to be an occupational therapist but so many people asked for help, he was making money more and more so he set that aside.  By his sophomore year he had all the necessary credits to graduate so he hacked into the school district computer system.

Ron's been married for almost 20 years and has 2 children and currently works at Digital West.  He's found that its less about the technology and more about people and building relationships

Janna Nichols, 5Cities Homeless Coalition

story-thumbnail
Janis Nichols updated us on what's been happening since her last visit in 2012.  The community services center didn't happen, but they have set up a virtual services center.  One of the large problems that the Coalition faces is the increase of rents by 40% in our area, plus the doubling of deposits.   All this is causing families to double up in housing, or losing their rentals due to new owners that are renovating and then raising rents.  So far in the 1st quarter of the year the coalitions has had 3x's the requests as last year.  The housing program last year helped 45 families get housing,  and housed 40 Vet's families.  During the rains this past winter they operated a warming center at social services and helped with the homeless that were removed from their encampment by the train station.  There are about 1,000 homeless youth and 150 that are without family.    Some of the family's that have been helped have been moved our of the area where they have more options and family support.

Volunteers are needed to come along side and teach budgeting and to work the warming center.

Steve Derose & Jim Souza of County Office of Education

Our special speakers were Steve Derose and Jim Souza with the County Department of Education.  They explained how our local High School are teaching and preparing students both college bound and now career ready.  California does a good job preparing those that are college bound, not not in what happens next, developing transferrable skills to the job market.  In the 60's and 70's the basics and life skills,  the 80's started gearing towards college.  37% of high school student go to college, with 2 out 10 actually finishing.  Students leaving high school were not prepared with the skills to enter the job market.  Today's south county schools have developed work based learning for those student not seeking college.  Steve and Jim are seeking employers that will reach out and make a difference in our youth and community.  Business that will partner with our high schools to provide work-based learning.  A job fair is planned for May so that students can see what's available, get their resumes ready and learn real-life skills needed in today's job market.

Areas where your business could help is being a speaker, job shadow opportunity, be a mentor, a summer job position,  internship, externship for a teacher be a panel judge or be a member of the advisory committee.  If interested contact Lor Pena at lpena@slocoe.org or 805-782-7258.

Guest Speaker Marvin Jackmon

Marvin Jackmon of Southern California Gas gave us an update on the pipeline work being done throughout San Luis Obispo county.  His job is to advise cities, businesses and residents about the work that is happening.  He is also told us that SOCAGAS is looking to sponsor community activities in our community.  The pipeline work that's being worked on is Price St in Pismo, which is Phrase 1.  Phrase 2 will be under the rail road and Phrase 3 is James Way ending at the Hilton Garden Hill at 4th and James.  The safety of customer, employees and communities are there top priority.  Additional areas where pipe will be replaced is Halcyon Rd from 101 to Hwy 1 to Valley Rd in Arroyo Grande and in September Valley Rd from Fair Oaks to Los Berros.  Two weeks prior to construction letters will be mailed to customers near the construction area, followed by door hangers going out 2 days before construction. mobilization.

SoCalGas' plan is expected to generate more than $1.9 billion in economic activity based on direct and indirect and supporting services.  Governments (State & Local) should see a $9 million boost in tax benefits from the Pipeline activitites along with more than 1,800 jobs.  SlCalGas has committed that 35% of its spending be invested in diverse businesses, and it's on track to meet this goal.

Jim & Jeff shared with us about their trip to Paraguay.  Jeff had a client that had lots of shoes and wanted to give them away.  Jim's daughter was spending time in Paraguay with the Peace Corp.  The Peach Corp accepted about 250  pairs of shoes, but there were many more left.  Jeff reached out to the Rotary Club in Paraguay and was connected with a Rotarian who was an importer.  While the strike in LA hindered the shipment after 3 months sitting on the docks they finally shipped but with additional cost.  Only problem was Paraguay doesn't accept import shoes, this problem was eventually solved.  Shoes went to a program to single mom's, these kids had never had a pair of shoes.  Unless you are wealthy, the people had never received a gift so didn't know to even say thank you.  Most adults had never even been to the capitol from their villages so they had never heard of Rotary.  The kids each planted a tree to recieve their shoes.

Our President, Breven Baima is currently vacationing in Cancun, but still made the time to visit the Rotary Club of Cancun and sent us a photo of the exchange of flags.

Valence Lutaisire was our special guest speaker, visiting from Unganda.  Valence is a rotarian and this is his 4th visit to the US.  He is the only one in his village to go to university.  He started a school that has 120 kids and has started a 2nd school to reach more children.  The kids walk 5 miles to get to school and are given 2 meals daily, for some its the only food they receive.  Steve Curry is organizing a trip to Unganda in the spring, if you interested in going let him know.  Our Board voted to sponsor 2 children.

World War II Veteran, Emil Minacicci was our guest.  He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1949 as a Water Tender 2nd Class.  While he never saw any battles he did commission and de-commission a ship in 1949, which made him a plank owner.  Emil's job was to make sure there was fresh water for the ship.  He served on the USS Delong.

USS DeLong (DE-684) was a Rudderow-class destroyer escort built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was launched on 23 November 1943 and was commissioned on 31 December 1943, Lt. Comdr. R.C. Houston in command. It was named after Weldon Fader DeLong, who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his action at Guadalcanal.

During World War II DeLong served primarily as a training ship for officers and men that were about to embark on ships assigned to anti-submarine warfare (ASW) duties. In early 1946 DeLong was decommissioned and assigned to the Reserve Fleet at Green Cove Springs, Florida. Following the outbreak of hostilities in KoreaDeLong was reactivated and on 7 February 1951 was again commissioned.

After a short training period DeLong was assigned to Escort Squadron Eight, Destroyer Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet. During this period of service DeLong participated in several Fleet Exercises and Midshipmen Cruises. In addition to routine fleet support missions, DeLong often served as a training ship for the Fleet Sonar School, Key West, Florida. On 3 January 1958, DeLong was assigned Group II status, joining the newly formed Reserve ASW Program in the 3d Naval District.

During the Berlin Crisis of 1960-1961, DeLong was assigned to the U. S. Atlantic Fleet as part of Escort Squadron 18 and homeported in Newport, Rhode Island. During this period DeLong operated extensively in the Caribbean area. On 1 August 1961, DeLong resumed her Group II status, operating under Commander, Naval Reserve Destroyer Division, 3d Naval District.

DeLong was decommissioned and struck from naval records in the late 1960s and was sunk as a target on 19 February 1970.  (Articile from Wikipedia)

After the War Emil married his high school sweetheart and started a clothing store next to his father's tailor shop,  he later moved to Santa Monica and was the manager of Harris and Frank.

Deb Jeffers of the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, was our featured speaker during the October 14th meeting.

Deb's training was as a X--ray Tech and worked at San Francisco General, where she was diagnosed with brain cancer.  She underwent brain surgery and was told she might not ever walk or talk.  Her family has been touched by cancer with both a niece, who lossed her fight at age 7 and also her mother,  who today cancer free.

Deb has worked for the cancer society for 7 years, heading the Relay for Life program.  Relay for Life stated in Washington state and is now gobal with 493 relays in California.  Our local relay is called the 5 cities relay and will take place in August 2016.  The proceeds from the race goes towards cancer research (none in our area), prevention and education, programs & services and advocacy.  Deb encouraged us to get involved, form or join a team, become a sponsor and/or made a donation, or volunteer at the event.

Do you want your business card featured in the bullentin?  All it takes is a $25 donation like Scott & Sandy with Blair Properties.

Honored Guest Veteran H.O. Williams

H.O. Williams was our honored WWII Veteran this week.  I asked what the H.O. stood for and he replied Hansel, but stopped using that name in the first grade.  Mr Williams volunteered for the Navy on his 18th birthday and reported for boot camp in Idaho, with additional schooling in North Dakota.  He spent most of the war in San Diego in ship repair.  Being his name was at the end of the alphabet he was assigned to sweep floors, but was trained as an assistant in the electrical field.

Mr Williams retired from Lockheed in 1991 and has lived in Arroyo Grande since 1998

Celebrating 25 Years of Women in Rotary!

Posted by Regina Sheldon on Apr 12, 2014

Susan Needleman Brown visited the club on April 9th and shared the history of the introduction of women to Rotary.  As little as 26 years ago, women were not permitted to join Rotary Clubs.  Following legislation and a change in thinking, Women are now a vital part of Rotary, both locally and abroad.  Our own club has enjoyed the leadership of several female Presidents and dedicated female members.  Susan presented the club with great ideas for growing the membership and involving the community.

Thank you Susan for an inspiring presentation!

Board approves new grant funding!

Posted by Regina Sheldon on Nov 17, 2013

On November 13th, the board approved $500 to support a global grant written by the Rotary Club of Moorpark.  The club funds will be part of a large $140,000 Global Grant supported by the Rotary Foundation, several clubs in our District 5240, clubs in District 3291 (Calcutta, India), clubs in Singapore, and a club in the U.S. district 5330.

The grant focuses on serving the needs of Polio Survivors in the Calcutta area.  While Polio is no longer an active threat in India, thanks to the work of Rotary and the World Health Organization, there are still hundreds of survivors in need of health care and other services.  This grant allocates funds for five areas of need:  1)  Surgeries for those whose ailments can be corrected beneficially through surgery.  2)  Provide braces/Calipers for those in need.  3)  Wheelchairs for those who are unable to walk.  4)  Vocational and Literacy training.  5)  Provide work placement and education so that survivors can sustain themselves.  The Rotary Club of Grover Beach-Five cities is proud to take part in this project that will greatly improve the quality of life for those we are able to help!

Transitiions Mental Health

Posted by Regina Sheldon on Nov 12, 2013

Jackie Garza with Transitions Mental Health spoke to the club on November 13th.  Transitions mental health is a non profit group dedicated to helping patients and families dealing with mental health issues.  The group was founded 30 years ago to provide a safe haven for those in need of services.  The group runs the SLO Hotline for those in crisis and provides case services throughout the County.  The goal is to provide immediate help for those in crisis and to assist those in care to the point that they can live independently.  The organization also runs Growing Grounds Farms, providing employment and fundraising opportunities for patients and the organizations.  The public can help by purchasing Christmas Trees or Poinsettia Plants from the group during the holidays, or by participating in the annual bowl-a-thon.

Club members were very supportive, acknowledging that nearly half of the club knew someone, or a family member of someone who is struggling with mental illness.  Chief Copsey complimented the work of the organization and stated that the department often refers people to the agency.  Thank you Jackie Garza and Transitions Mental Health!

The District Loves SLO!

Posted by Regina Sheldon on Oct 21, 2013

District Conference was held this past weekend at the Embassy Suites in San Luis Obispo.  Our sister city hosted the 73 clubs in the district, offering tours of Hearst Castle, Wine Tasting, Bike Tours, and more.  Past RI President Kalyan Banerjee gave an inspirational speech on Friday night, followed by Rick King on Saturday morning.  Ron Burton could not attend, but sent a representative to move the crowd on Saturday night.  The weekend concluded with a Sunday morning inspirational talk given by Shirley Grace.

Several members of the Rotaract Club of SLO attended and presented a video highlighting a recent trip to Mexico, where they got dirty building a room addition for a local family.  All were very impressed by this dynamic young club.  The conference was made even more special by visiting delegations from our sister districts in both South Korea and Mexico.

Blue Badge member - Bev Goble

Posted by Lisa Evans on Oct 01, 2013

Greetings:
A brief introduction to Beverly Goble

First, I much prefer being called Bev unless its in print.  I think that goes back to my childhood as my parents only called me Beverly when they were upset with me.  I was the youngest of 2 girls for 9 years and then my mom had twins, 1 girl, 1 boy and we the older girls argued over who got to hold the boy.  Now were all best of friends.  I grew up in Minnesota, I used to say where people preserved well due to the cold, now I never visit in the winter. My younger sister, Barb is the last hold-out there.  I've lived in California for over 30 years, most of it being here on the central coast.

I was married for 28 years until my husband's death in 2011.  I have 3 great adult kids, Kari, Tim & Jon.  Kari is married to her, husband Rob whose in the Navy and they have 2 kids, Meagan 12 and Christian 7.   Jon is married to Crystal and are expecting their 1st little girl, Lola soon.  Tim is single.  All my kids are local so I get plenty of time to be Grammie.

Before kids I drove school bus, city transit, and tractor trailer, I like big vehicles and  was a church secretary.  Once my kids were born I stayed home with them.  Then in 1999 I went back to driving school bus here for Lucia Mar.  I also drove for Silverado and SCAT for a while.  I also had a home-based business in the telcom industry.  After my husband's death, I changed to SendOutCards, after receiving 100's of cards I understood the power of a greeting card.  I love that I can help people reach out to others through Appreciation Marketing, or show that mom or dad how they can stay home with their kids by working from home.  SendOutCards is the number 1 sender of 1st class mail in the world and during the Christmas season are posed to send over 800,000 greeting cards a day.  I can honestly say I get paid for doing nice things for other people and it can't get any better than that.

Rotarian Etiquette & Other Good Advice

Posted by Anita Shower
story-thumbnail

- A man is to remove his hat as soon as he enters the building.

- Each member should greet the guest speaker; and, if you have to leave the meeting early, mention this to the speaker.

- The American flag pin is to be worn as close to the heart as possible.

- Your name badge is to be worn on the right of your chest as it is then an 'easy read' from the hand shake to your name.

- When you are a Rotarian, you are an image of Rotary.  When you wear your lapel pin, people see you as a Rotarian first.

- Be careful with e-mail and all web sites; everyone may read everything; it is only a matter of time.

- No one is to see a woman put on or take off her gloves.

- After the meeting, you should always thank the guest speaker for their presentation.

The Four Way Test and Etiquette

Posted by Anita Shower

Rotary's Four Way test and the life lessons found in an etiquette book go hand in hand. The simile of truth and etiquette bring a vivid picture to the mind, one that focuses on upbringing, support, benefit, fairness, and graciousness. All of the lessons a young person should be introduced to are found in etiquette just as all of life's lessons a grown person should be aware of are found within the twenty-four words that are the make-up of the Four Way Test.

There have been two major cycles:  the tech bubble which we all remember and the recent real estate turn-of-events. Oil and gas have hit some peaks as have government securities.

The Track meet is scheduled for May 17th, 9AM-2PM. We would not have to run it or set it up; just help at the event and spend some money. This event gets a large turnout of parents and families so it would be good publicity for the club. There was Club consensus to move forward. Good idea, Steve!

Cooking is a tradition in my family. My grandmother, my mother, and I all love to cook. I started cooking when I was seven years old. I cooked mostly cakes in the beginning but it helped me understand the basics of cooking. As I grew older I started to make new recipes and to try new flavors. I find the time to cook everyday in France and it gives me great pleasure to cooking for my friends and family. I don't wan to be a professional cook but I want cooking to remain an important part of my life.

Cycling trip to Albi, France

Mike and his wife, Marian, participated in a cycling exchange started as a Sister Cities exchange between Palo Alto, CA and Albi, France. The first exchange was in 1999 when cyclists from Palo Alto visited Albi and in 2000 the Albi cyclists visited Palo Alto. Each bike club member from the US stayed with a host family from the Albi bike club and the Palo Alto, Western Wheelers, cycling club hosted the Albi cyclists the next year.

The French cyclists are strong riders and cycling is a highly regarded sport in France. Cars are careful with cyclists; the law dictates 3 ft clearance between a car and a cyclist. The cars were very careful and courteous when passing cyclists.

Arnie Dowdy, Past District Governor, Past President of several Rotary Clubs and currently the chair of the District Rotary Foundation spoke to us about the many services and accomplishments of Rotary International and the separate entity, Rotary Foundation. He reminded us about the dour look of Paul Harris, founder of Rotary that is seen on Paul Harris documents, etc. He said that Paul was quite a character, good sense of humor and one example during his youth he would ride on a train's cow catcher in the front of the engine ten miles one way and then turn around and do the same thing coming back. He followed the suggestion of one of his contemporaries and decided to take the first five years after college and live a full life. During this time he roamed around the US. He was a cowboy, actor, picked fruit, salesman, and had many wonderful experiences. Paul said, "I intend to make a life, not a living."

President Cavanaugh introduced our guest speaker, John Shoals, Mayor Pro Tem, Grover Beach City Council, who talked about the vision, goals, and accomplishments in the City of Grover Beach.

John's presentation was well organized and presented with great visuals of activities in GroverBeach. One of his first visuals was a quote by Robert Stevenson, "Politics is perhaps the only profession for which no preparation is thought necessary." John said, "I set out to disprove that quote early on in my career as a politician." John explained that the council has three major functions: Provide a vision for the future of the city and set policies for staff to follow; make sure that the city is fiscally well; and, make decisions based upon information provided by staff and the public, including environmental reviews and laws applicable to the issue.

Providing Hope to Children Orphaned by HIV

Posted by Mike Balster

In the last eight years, the impact of HIV/AIDS has been felt severely in the villages of the NongkhaiProvince in northeastern Thailand.

The Good Shepherd Sisters have worked in the area since 1981, providing, through income-generating projects, opportunities by which people are able to help themselves. Their social welfare programs assist over 600 children to attend school and further their studies, the costs of which are often prohibitive for poor rural families. Their Village Outreach Program reaches out to the most vulnerable, including those living with HIV/AIDS.

Klassje was a manager of finance in Santa Barbara, worked for Matel Toys, and has spent the last 18 years as the manager of the SLO airports. She oversees the SLO regional airport and the Oceano general aviation airport. The airports are self sustaining, meaning no tax revenues are collected to maintain the airports. The Oceano airport has always operated in the red so the SLO airport must support it.

The new flight to Salt Lake City was won through an agreement to extend the runway at SLO airport. At the current runway length, the 700-mile flights to Salt Lake City were weight limited. The additional 800 feet of runway eliminates this restriction and allows flights to other destinations like Denver and Seattle.

In a remote corner of NE Thailand, Good Shepherd Sisters established a school and work place for people and children affected by AIDS. The villages find children being raised by their grandparents, single parents with AIDS, or adopted into other families that have also been affected by AIDS. The Sisters have 75 children going to their school and have set up work and training opportunities where families are trained to make enough money to care for themselves and their children. If this didn't happen, many families would be forced to sell their children to the sex trade in Bangkok. Unscrupulous men offer money to the families to take their children to Bangkok. Often, these children end up in the sex trade in Bangkok or neighboring large cities. If these children or young adults return they are infected with AIDS.

Beachfront Lodge : Brenda Cavanaugh introduced Bob Perrault, City Manager of Grover Beach, who gave us some insight on how the Beachfront Lodge and other pressing city issues fit into the Grover Beach Community Vision.

Bob explained that the Beachfront Lodge will be located at the end of Grand Avenue near Finns Restaurant. A joint-powers-agreement was recently signed marking a significant hurdle to making the lodge a reality. The Request For Proposal (RFP) has been released and is due to be completed by December 10, 2007. The next hurdle is to identify a concessionaire, scheduled to be selected early next year. The RFP is on the city's website and contains the detailed requirements. The plan is to break ground mid-year 2008. Both Bob and John Shoals have spent months shepherding this project. A city council task force will be identified in the next couple of months.

I hope everyone in your club had a Happy Easter and thank you for all that you have done to try to help the Good Shepherd Sisters project.  I have only heard from the woman who bought the cards. We sure would love some assistance in buying the rice field. The total is $20,000 and I have raised a few thousand already, mostly my own donation. It is a life-sustaining project as you know and will last for years and years to come. The current residents, their children, and grandchildren will benefit from the additional field.

Every dollar comes from Rotarians and friends who serve Rotary. The $1,000 Paul Harris donation to the Foundation is held in account for three years drawing interest before 100% of the donation is placed in the general fund for projects. Last year $80 million was contributed and three years later, it will all be spent.

Good Shepherd Sisters, Responding to the Needs

In 1981, the Good shepherd Sisters came to Nong Khai, in the northeast of Thailand. Having worked in Bangkok since 1965 with the women who migrated to the city from the rural areas, they understood the pressures on rural families in trying to satisfy their most basic needs. It was clear to the Sisters that these people, disadvantaged in so many ways, had no choices available to them. Lacking an education or training of any sort, employment opportunities were limited. To this day the Good Shepherd Sisters have been a source of empowerment, improving the quality of life for all involved.
