Life Interrupted - DUI laws and the impact on our community.
Oct. 04, 2017
Over the course of this summer, there have been multiple DUI crashes that resulted in deaths in Kern County. Scott will speak about the laws that apply to deadly DUIs. He will explain how he worked with the mother of a DUI victim to successfully change the law in California to make it easier to prove second degree murder charges in a DUI case. Scott will also speak about how he has personally witnessed the devastation a DUI death has on families. Finally, Scott will show a presentation of "A Life Interrupted". Scott is the President of "A Life Interrupted" which is a program that was created to educate high schoolers about the dangers of distracted driving.
Biography:
Scott is a former MP in the Army where he served at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe before being honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. Scott graduated from Fresno State and then McGeorge School of Law. He began working in the Kern County District Attorney's Office immediately after passing the bar and has remained in that office for the last 23 years. During his time as a DA, Scott has prosecuted crimes ranging from misdemeanors to murders and has personally tried over 100 felony jury trials, almost half of which were murder, sexual assault and serious child abuse cases. Scott has served as the Assistant District Attorney for the District Attorney's Office for the last 6 years. In that capacity, he has handled the budget, personnel issues, office policies, and crime lab oversight as well as running the office when District Attorney Lisa Green cannot be there.

Ridgecrest Animal Shelter
Dec. 06, 2017
Mary Stage will give us an update on the shelter, the new cat house, the services they provide and what they are doing to reduce overpopulation.
30 years ago, Mary started out as a volunteer at the shelter, after a few years a position opened for a kennel attendant and she applied and got the job. Her whole life revolved around animals, she was that kid everyone would bring their sick or injured animals to. In junior high school, she volunteered for a vet hospital. During that time, she saved her first animal from being put to sleep because the owners couldn’t afford to care for the dog. She begged the vet to allow her to try and care for the dog. Mary told the vet that she would be responsible for the dog's treatment. She didn’t think he believed her at first. Finally, the vet said he would her the treatment plan and if she didn’t follow thorough he would have to put the dog down. Before and after school, Mary, would ride her bike to the vet hospital. She would give the dog the treatment and spend weekends at the vet hospital. The dog survived and Mary put her up for adoption. My career was cast when I found a great family to adopt her.
