Retired State Corrections Officer
Aug. 23, 2017
Starting working for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on 9/16/96. I was a Correctional Officer for 9 years and promoted to Correctional Counselor I for my remaining career. I was known as CCI Verdesoto, or, Miss V. My job consisted of reviewing and setting up programs for incarcerated inmates, most of them being Life Term Inmates. Starting with the Departments number one priority for every inmate, education. I would meet with the inmates on my caseload at least once a year after the Orientation phase. If they had any other issues they were afforded the opportunity to meet with me during Open-Line which is held twice a week. In addition to setting up programs with education, work or vocations, I also ran a Juvenile Deterrent Group called We Care and a self-help group called Life Cycles. In September of last year I was married and retired in December after serving 20 years. I moved from my home town of Paso Robles to Porterville with my husband. My husband and I moved to Ridgecrest in June after his company sold in Porterville. |

Ridgecrest Animal Shelter
Dec. 06, 2017
Mary Stage will give us an update on the shelter, the new cat house, the services they provide and what they are doing to reduce overpopulation.
30 years ago, Mary started out as a volunteer at the shelter, after a few years a position opened for a kennel attendant and she applied and got the job. Her whole life revolved around animals, she was that kid everyone would bring their sick or injured animals to. In junior high school, she volunteered for a vet hospital. During that time, she saved her first animal from being put to sleep because the owners couldn’t afford to care for the dog. She begged the vet to allow her to try and care for the dog. Mary told the vet that she would be responsible for the dog's treatment. She didn’t think he believed her at first. Finally, the vet said he would her the treatment plan and if she didn’t follow thorough he would have to put the dog down. Before and after school, Mary, would ride her bike to the vet hospital. She would give the dog the treatment and spend weekends at the vet hospital. The dog survived and Mary put her up for adoption. My career was cast when I found a great family to adopt her.
