Announcements
Pres. Andrew welcomed us and announced that the Board had approved offering Nancy McKarney an honorary membership, and she happily accepted.
Laudon told us that two of her cousins were stricken with Polio and how seeing them not being able to do things that most children do drove her to take on the 5K Walk/Run to End Polio that will be held on Sat., 10/11. (see photo collage below)

THIS WEEK'S PRESENTATION
JIM BRESCIA, SLO COUNTY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT
Jim told us some interesting facts about SLO County Schools. It encompasses 4,000 square miles and includes 10 districts. One of the campuses in Shandon USD, Parkville School, is actually in Monterey County. Atascadero USD has more square miles than the Los Angeles Unified SD! The Photo & Print Shop at Coast is recognized as a leader in the state. Every high school in the county has dual enrollment opportunities with Cuesta College. To encourage younger people to remain in the county, SLO County Schools has partnered with SLO Partners, which works with local employers to identify their hiring needs and then designs specific, fast-tracked bootcamp training programs to teach in-demand skills. Underused buildings within the school district have been revamped to accommodate these boot camps for students and residents. One example of this program's success is that 60 dental assistants have been trained and placed in local jobs.
After Jim shared with us about the school district, he joined with his long-time friend, Donna, for their rendition of Oh, Solo Mia. Thank you, Jim, for an eye-opening presentation about SLO COunty Office of Education.
