Club Business- After much deliberation and fist shaking, The Rotary Club of Bakersfield finally has an updated set of bylaws. There were 37 members present in the meeting at the time of the vote. Pete Pankey moved to accept the changes, and Ken Keller seconded the motion. The motion passed with unanimous approval.

Good News and Announcements

Garro Ellis stated the obvious, that the Dodgers won the World Series.

Ken Beurmann finally received Jennifer Sampson's book.

The club will be attempting the hold in-person meetings starting on December 3rd. More info to follow.

Jordan Kaufman (pronounced cow-oof-man, not cough-man), provided the club with his own tax themed Covid-Connect.

Program

Michael Nelson from Kid CAT came in to discuss an extraordinarily important topic that left many of our members speechless. There are many young adults that make mistakes in their lives and find themselves incarcerated. Many of these young adults committed their crimes as children who come from broken and/or abusive homes. As Michael noted, "hurt creates hurt". And by building a support system that allows these men to come to grips with their own pain, only then can true healing begin. Kid CAT is a group of juvenile lifers (men serving life with the possibility of parole for crimes committed while under the age of 18) at San Quentin State Prison who run a program to provide one another support and give back to others inside and outside the prison. "Kid" stands for their age when they committed their crimes. "CAT" stands for "creating awareness together." Michael told gripping stories of the change that this program has brought not only to his life, but the lives of the other men convicted of horrendous crimes. Many of the men who started this program at San Quentin have now been paroled, and continue to provide support and guidance to fellow youth offenders.
