Art Sherwin – artist and teacher

As a young man, Art was thrown into teaching art with experience and known aptitude for neither teaching nor art. Through trial and error, skill with people and observation of how his students responded, he becomes a beloved and respected teacher. He learned that in teaching “nice is more important than knowledge” and that “you stand out if you make their day!”

And through time he developed a style of art that is creative and uniquely his. Art is continually pushing the boundaries with his innovation and creativity. On display at BMOC is his series “Uncommon Perspectives,” a study of perspective and storytelling in his paintings. His unique approach of using a dark base color, taping lines over that, adding lots of colors, then removing the tape yield dramatic and colorful perspectives to familiar scenes around Bakersfield. The scenes he creates gives one a perspective and appreciation for the details we often overlook. His city scenes are more geometric, while his nature scenes have more of a cadence, both utilizing variations of calligraphy, small designs making up the total, and bright splashes of color. Viewing his work is truly fun and thought-provoking.
