Good News:

Juan Hernandez Garcia from Bakersfield East Rotary talked about KernYes, the youth empowerment summit. It’s a day-long event for high school students. They are looking for volunteers to be counselors. For more information go to KernYes.org.

Winn Eaton is excited about the long awaited Centennial corridor. He encouraged everyone to go and enjoy the opening festivities.

The President’s Gala is happening soon!  Remember, little program, lots of party! President Joe generously announced he will be a presenting sponsor, and fined Nik with a Presenting Sponsorship. Please email Toni at toni.harper@commonspirit.org to reserve your tickets/sponsorship before we open them to the district!

New Members:

President Joe welcomed two new members.

Mike Sulfa was sponsored by Sheryl Barbich. Mike was a member of Interact when he was in high school. Currently, he serves as superintendent of the Kern High School District, which is the largest high school district in the state with over 44,000 students. Mike is a graduate of UC Santa Barbara, and has his doctorate from Liberty University. He was a teacher at Garces and South High, and then became principal at South High School. He’s worked in personnel, business and instruction. We’re excited to welcome Mike to the club!

Steve Rodrigue was sponsored by Kathy Scrivner. Steve is the Director of Code Enforcement for the City of Bakersfield. He is a devoted father and husband. He thanked the club for the warm welcome and talked about his 18 years in Bakersfield. He was in the Coast Guard from 1994 to 2017 and then retired. He served two tours in the Middle East during this time. He talked about the motto of service above self, and said that he tries to live by that; and is excited that Rotary will give him even more opportunity. Thank you for your service Steve, and welcome to the club!

Program

Alli Soper introduced our program for the day. Dana Levy. She is a relationship coach and offered professional relationship growth tips. She’s lived in Bakersfield for six years.

She detailed three keys to communication.

1) If you don’t have someone’s attention then don’t even open your mouth. She talked about respecting yourself, and being sure that you have the person’s attention before speaking.

2) She described communication between two people, A and B; and how what A intends to say is often misunderstood by B. She talked about businesses having service agreements and contracts to clarify expectations. But in personal relationships we don’t have that. Therefore, it’s even more important to be clear on the transmission of information from one person to the other.

3)A key to good communication is choosing one topic and staying on it. You have to remain on point–and keep others on it as well. . Jumping from issue to issue will result in failed communication. This is true in both business and personal relationships.
