Pete Pankey clarified previous information published in the Spoke. Raising the minimum wage to  $21/hour would not bring economic prosperity to all. (As the speaker at the program Pete is referring to – he is absolutely correct, rather $21/hr is an aspirational indicator of a rate leading to more Kern residents having the ability to live without government subsidies. It is a metric used to illustrate a quality job.)

 

Steve Sanders, having just returned from a visit to Alaska, belatedly thanked the club for their support of Holiday Lights.

 

Traco Matthews announced that he and his lovely wife, Jessica, will celebrate their  20^th wedding anniversary next Wednesday.

 

Ashley Sodergren announced that she had recently been promoted to  Senior Director, Walk to End Alzheimer's for the Alzheimer's Association, California Southland Chapter AND purchased a new home.

 

President Ken provided a brief update from Wednesday’s Board meeting – they are cautiously examining the potential for in-person meetings. Cautious but optimistic….

And our last Good News Announcement was provided by Randy Saunders who shared that our very own Jay Rosenlieb was recently recognized by Boys Scouts of America with a Silver Antelope Award. This prestiguos award is historically given to individuals exhibiting extraordinary leadership in distinguished service to youth. It recognizes registered Scouters for their noteworthy service of exceptional character provided within the region’s territory. Congratulations Jay!

 

 

President Ken welcomed Jay, reminding members that his bio had been included in the meeting invite. For those who missed it –

 

Jay L. Rosenlieb graduated from Claremont McKenna College, cum laude, in 1980, and earned a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law, University of California, in 1983. Jay chairs the KDG employment law group, representing management in employment litigation and counseling, with a practice focus on designing strategic solutions for compliance in the areas of wage and hour law, discrimination and harassment, wrongful termination, and workforce downsizing, as well as representation of management under the National Labor Relations Act.

 

He outlined COVID related policies and legislation that been implemented throughout 2020. Beginning with the initial stay at home orders, the establishment of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) and other executive orders through the passage of SB 1159, AB 1867, and AB 685. November 2020 brought OSHA Regulation 3205 which provided definitions, required written CPP plans, establish (c )(10) leave, return to work regulations, and workplace outbreak obligations.

 

Jay provided an engaging and informative program - COVID-19 in the Workplace

 

On the subject of Mandatory or Voluntary Vaccinations, Jay offered that employers could absolutely make vaccinations mandatory but cautioned that liability comes into play as issues around noncompliance, as well as allowing for exceptions for medical conditions and religious beliefs.

 

Members asked a variety of thoughtful questions. President Ken thanked Jay for such an informative program and offered a token of appreciation – a $50 donation to the Mission of Kern County in his name.
