Highlights

Prayer by Bryon Burrow, Flag Salute by Jordan Kaufman and special song lead by Colleen McGauley who serenaded President Dave with a Valentine song – It had to be you.

Good News and announcements

  • Larry Reider thanked all those that signed up to help with the Ethics Conference.
  • The Nicaragua Trip will be November 4-12, talk to Jeff Green if you are interested in attending.
  • President Dave announced that we have $2500 to spend this fiscal year or it will evaporate.  The Board suggested building a water feature at the entrance to Camp KEEP.  Who wants to volunteer on that project?  Enough hands went up that we will pursue this project.
  • Ben Stinson avoided a fine by making good on his promise to acknowledge the Rotary Club of Bakersfield within the first five minutes behind the mic on the Richard Beene show.  It was reported that he uttered those words within the first 30 seconds.  Well done Ben!
  • President Dave informed us of the Annual Meeting which will be held this year on March 23rd
  • We have a few By-Law changes and if you would like to read them in full prior to the meeting so that you can provide fully informed input, President Dave will send them to you, just let him know.
  • Garro reminded us about the Waterman Foundation applications -  all it takes is a recommendation from a Rotarian.  Get your recommendations in soon!

The program

Garro introduced our program today.  Vicky Thrasher from Critters without Litters, who said she was nervous and then went on to deliver a very informative program regarding the spay and neuter services they provide.  Did you know that 70,000 dogs and cats are born every day in the US?  When they first started their spay and neuter services in 2011, 20K animals were euthanized.  This last year, that number was down to about 10K.  They are making progress but there is much more to be done.  Vicky stated, “we cannot rescue or adopt our way out of this problem in Kern County.”  They continue to collaborate with the City and County shelters.  They perform 50-60 surgeries per day.  Anyone interested in donating to this cause, please let Mary know.

Save the dates

Regular meeting next week and then we are off site on March 2nd @CSUB and then the All Club Meeting is on March 9th at the Double Tree Hotel.
