Mini Kenny started out the meeting by teaching us Millennial slang. The word of the week was “Receipts.” We give Mini Kenny and Big Kenny a trophy for this one.

Birthdays! Mike Chertok, Ken Secor and Steve Illingworth all celebrated birthdays on August 6^th! Happy birthday guys!

Good News:

Joe Hay was promoted to President of Jim Burke Ford and Dan Hay has assumed the role of chairman of the board.

Mark Barnes received his Paul Harris Award via conveyor belt.

Michelle Chantry showed off a new Tampa Bay Buccaneer jersey (Tom Brady edition!)

We learned that Mike Willis only shops online and that he only buys alcohol and frosted flakes. Well done Willeyboy!

Steve Sanders facilitated a panel discussion with Dr. Mary Barlow (KCSOS), Dr. Lynnette Zelezny (CSUB), and Dr. Bryon Schaefer (KHSD). Dr. Doc Ervin (BCSD) joined via pre-recorded video. These amazing community leaders gave a candid update on the status of local schools. Here are a few highlights from the panel discussion.

Dr. Mary Barlow
KCSOS serves approximately 200,000 students spread out across approximately 100 square miles. The education system changed on March 17, 2020, when the state’s shelter in place order forced distance learning and drive-through food service to be immediately implemented. KCSOS also spearheaded a program that included the distribution of 17,000 Chromebooks and the configuration of 5,000 hotspots. The educational plan being used presently is focused on rigorous distance learning. Once Kern County is off the list for at least 14 days, in-person instruction will become an option. When schools do open, the following practices will be implemented:

Children under 2 years old – No face coverings required
2 years old to 2^nd grade – Face covering strongly encouraged
3^rd grade to high school- Face coverings required

Dr. Bryon Schaefer
KHSD serves over 40,000 students across 25 locations. Distance learning has been embraced as a strategy by KHSD. The strategy is based on State guidelines and a core piece of technology being used is the Canvas learning management system (LMS). This system augments daily, live interaction. KHSD is driving broad and wide partnerships to meet the needs of the students. Sports seasons are pushed back to early 2021 but high school starts on August 24, 2020, and the traditional letter grading model will be in effect.

Dr. Zelezny
CSUB serves over 11,000 students and has implemented a hybrid model of education. 51 on-campus courses will be held this fall and approximately 865 students will be on-site on any given day. 90% of CSUB staff will be telecommuting through January 4, 2021. The Big West Conference has postponed all fall sports, but this decision does not impact Basketball.
