Good News & Announcements:
Justin Salters announced the Kern County Department of Human Service’s 35th Annual Holiday Cottage is now OPEN! The Holiday Cottage was established in 1987, to fill the wishes of children placed in Kern County Foster and Group Homes. Each year with the help of community members, sponsors, DHS staff, and other county departments, our community has filled thousands of children’s wishes. To donate, please visit www.kcdhs.org/resources/holiday-cottage.
Mike McCoy thanked our club for assisting in sponsoring the Kern County Museum’s Safe Halloween! More than 9,000 people enjoyed the event – and I’m sure our local dentists will be seeing an influx of business very soon!
Mark Barnes invited us to participate in the Rotary International Rose Parade float decorating. Please contact him for details.
Dave Whelden is hoping we can all join him for some festive bell ringing this holiday season. You can make a difference by dawning your red for the Salvation Army and raising funds for local families in need. Sign-up at our next meeting or contact him directly to get started.
Jason Cater invited our club to join him on a 25-person hike at Tejon Ranch on Saturday, November 19, at 8:30 a.m. – if you want to get in a sweat, RSVP to Mary as soon as possible, and contact Jason for any further questions.
Nik Boone announced the grand opening of his latest Ascend Real Estate and Property Management building. Congratulations!!!
In other good news, our club raised more than $4,000 at the Barbich’s Dia De Los Muertos Party and we celebrated our November birthdays – these members are either Scorpios or Sagittarius’, and bring emotion, ambition, optimism, and adventure to our club. Thanks for sharing your great traits with us!
We also welcomed two new members! Toni Harper introduced Emily Duran, CEO of Kern Health Systems and Jorge Barrientos introduced Jean-Luc Slagle, Owner and Creative Director of Scope Studios.

Program:
In the spirit of the holiday season, I felt this week’s program was all about giving. Especially, the giving of one’s skills, time, and knowledge to help the greater good. Not bad for a little Rotarian inspiration, huh?
Our guest was none other than Dr. Cameron Guinn. Not only is he a smart employee of Kern County Superintendent of Schools, but outside of his day job (and sometimes in the middle of it – thanks, Mary Barlow!) he volunteers as a member of the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Dive Team.

The KCSO SAR Dive Team consists of 20 volunteers who devote their underwater expertise to assisting KCSO in everything from rescuing people to criminal cases. Sometimes, these volunteers are uncovering evidence in an aqueduct with zero visibility, and other times, they’re helping a family recover their packages after driving into the water on Christmas Eve.
These divers are some of the most highly trained in the state and are the only volunteer SAR Team in California. I think that speaks volumes about the level of giving that happens here in Kern County.
Dr. Guinn, thank you for risking your life to “bring people to justice,” as you shared with us during your presentation.
We appreciate your heart, passion, and art of storytelling.
