Bakersfield's first brewery got underway near what is now Truxtun Avenue and P Street in 1872. It was run by H.A. Jastro, Col. Thomas Baker's son-in-law.

The Bakersfield Brewing Company was founded in 1912. It was one of the early breweries in Bakersfield and operated for over 50 years. Founder Joseph Baumgartner died from cirrhosis of the liver just a month after opening.

The last brewery in Bakersfield closed in 1920, when the 18th Amendment was passed, prohibiting the sale of alcohol nationwide.

The Kern Brewing Company was the first brewery to open up after prohibition in 1937 but closed within a few years.

The brewing industry in Bakersfield began to make a comeback in the 1980s. Today there are 9 to 10 local breweries.

The Waterman Foundation had ample funds in the scholarship fund, allowing them to provide financial assistance to every applicant. Their grant program encompassed a wide range of projects, from providing laptops to students to funding hospitals and children's centers. Over the years, this program has made a significant impact on countless charities in Bakersfield.

Both the Waterman Scholarship and Grant program have achieved remarkable success, collectively raising over $1 million for each fund. Through effective management, they have been able to maintain the funds while also consistently distributing proceeds throughout the community.

During the 100-year anniversary party, the Waterman Foundation successfully raised +$10,000, further contributing to their cause.

 

In the recent scholarship cycle, Waterman awarded $37,000 to 16 students, with five of them being renewals. Renewal recipients demonstrated their commitment by maintaining good grades and reapplying for the grant. The breakdown of the grants included $1,500 for three BC students, $2,500 each for a UC Berkeley, UCSD, UC Merced, and University of Idaho student, as well as $2,500 each for nine CSUB students.

 

Heartfelt appreciation is extended to the individuals who have played a crucial role in the foundation's success. We'd like to give a special shout-out to Toni Harper, our dedicated powerhouse who single-handedly manages to do all the work while the rest try to keep up!
