Tracy Kiser and Kristen Beall provided details about the upcoming Margarita Party at Lou and Sheryl Barbich’s home on September 13th at 6:00PM. They promised cold beer, a delicious taco bar, refreshing La Rosa bars, mariachi music and Lou’s famous margaritas. Space is still available so be sure to sign up.
Dr. O’Reilly, president of the Bakersfield chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, invited members to attend their upcoming meeting on September 17th at Hodel’s and hear from Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood.
Jim Baldwin enthusiastically reported that two gently used vans had been recently donated to BARC by Greg Gallion and the Houchin Community Blood Bank.
Sue Benham reported that Dignity Memorial Hospital recently dedicated a new hybrid cath lab – the first of its kind in Kern County. It will allow for both surgical and non-surgical procedures to be done in the same room without having to move patients.
Charlie Moe reminded members of the upcoming Distinguished Citizen Dinner for the Boy Scouts Southern Sierra Council on September 7th at 6:00 PM at Luigi’s. This year’s recipient is Monsignor Craig Harrison.
Dr. Lynnette Zelezny announced that three engineering programs at CSUB have received accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. They include computer engineering, electrical engineering and engineering sciences.
Paul Sheldon reported that his eldest son is completing his 2nd year residency at UC Irvine in Critical Care Pulmonology and has a whole host of medical centers vying for his skills.
Win Eaton reported that the recent issue of Bakersfield Life magazine has voted him top attorney in immigration services.
Greg Gallion acknowledged the recent donation of vans to BARC and confirmed reports that he will be retiring form Houchin Community Blood Bank at the end of the year.
President Ray recognized Joe Gregory and Jim Damian for having their businesses, Grapevine MSP Technology Services and Stria LLC, ranked on 2018’s Inc. 5000, a prestigious ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing privately held companies. Joe thanked President Ray for the recognition and accepted a $100 fine – the first issued during Ray’s tenure. While Jim was not in attendance, he will likely face similar consequences next week.
The Program
John Schuler introduced our speaker, Captain Nathan Schuler USAF. Nathan is the second John and Patty’s nine children. He graduated from Montana State University where he participated in the Air Force ROTC program and earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. While at MSU, Nathan attended an 8-week special-ops camp at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the rest, as they say, is history!
Nathan serves in the United States Air Force and was initially stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. He is currently stationed at Los Angeles AFB where he works in engineering and acquisitions.
Nathan spoke to the Club about Cyber War, Info Ops, & Why You Should Always Meet Your Protest Organizer in Person. The goal of his presentation was to dispel the fear, uncertainty, and doubt around Cyber War. To do this he focused on educating us about the United States two major threats – Russia and China.
Nathan explained that Russia is a fallen power under Putin but still thinks of itself as a country to be respected. It currently uses cyber warfare to create chaos and preserve power. Russia practices Hybrid Warfare using non-overt tools and tactics to influence the hearts and minds of the populations they are ‘attacking’. They have shown no boundaries between wartime and peacetime. Nathan highlighted several cyber war and major hacks attributed to the Russians, as well as examples of what he called ‘Information Operations’ which they used to disrupt the Ukranian presidential election (2014) and Democratic National Convention (2016)
China, on the other hand, focuses their efforts on creating an economic impact to support their strategic goals. Examples of these actions include security and information breaches to gain proprietary information – hacking a Navy contractor to gain sensitive data on submarine warfare or using a GE engineer to steal power plant technology.
Currently the U.S. uses deterrence (network defenses and legal remedies) and retaliation (tariffs and hack backs) to combat cyber warfare but continued education and preparation are key to our continued dominance.
