Joe Hay introduced his mom, Mikie Hay, who invited this year’s Ford Dimension class of outstanding high school seniors  to introduce themselves: Claire Champagne (Foothill), Amador Gallardo (East), Naomi Jennings (Stockdale), Margo Kuney (BHS), Naveen Mathew (Centennial), Payton Renz (Liberty), Nate Roodzant (BCHS), Jessica Stump (BCHS), Fernando Tello (Highland)and Shotaro Yamaguchi (Ridgeview).

They described their community service projects, which are “Greetings from Bakersfield,” “Adulteens,” “S.O.S.” and “Escape the Vape.”

The Program:

Check out this dance video from the program- amazing!

Andrea Hansen from Kern Dance Alliance (KDA) presented a vibrant program which showed how dance and the arts can help address community needs such as literacy, cancer, poverty, Alzheimer’s disease, people with disabilities and STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) education. The KDA reached 9000 people in 2018 through an array of programs throughout Kern County, including Books in Motion, National Dance Day, SHINE for Girls and ADAPTdance for people with cognitive and physical disabilities.

The KDA is making an impact by focusing on the “Bigger Picture” which, as Andrea described it, recognizes that the arts and culture promote tourism, welcome young professionals to live and work in Kern County and offer families a dynamic community. The Bigger Picture encourages learning, healthy living, understanding, and tolerance.

The program concluded with a beautiful performance by Olivia, a talented dancer from Bakersfield City Ballet.

Community donations, memberships and sponsorships help support these outstanding programs. For more information, visit kerndance.org.
