Jeff Green Update

Last week we featured a photo of ex-Downtowner, Jeff Green, teaching some children a "hard lesson". Well, you can't say he doesn't apply those lessons at home.
He tells the Spoke that since his retirement, his income has significantly decreased. To support his opulent lifestyle, he demanded his sons take second jobs in packing sheds to augment his income. A hard lesson indeed for youngsters Matthew and Andrew.
P.S. He wants us to know he misses the fellowship of Downtown Rotary and will welcome any visitors to Vegas with open arms and a cold beer.

Good news & announcements:

  • Jeff Gutierrez announced his subordination to Jim Damian by way of delivering coffee to Jim while wearing what may have been women’s swimwear.
  • Pat Collins announced that he successfully completed the CASA Superhero run and in doing so earned a podium spot in the geriatric division.  Way to go Pat!
  • Young Jorge Barrientos turned a year older today and opted for a short birthday song in exchange for $50. Happy birthday Jorge.
  • Dave Wheldon announced the need for a bell-ringing captain to man the Urrichio’s location.  Pat Collins quickly volunteered.
  • Jason Cater announced that he will be joining the ranks of fatherhood!  Jason and his wife are expecting their first child in May 2020.  Congratulations to Jason and his wife!
  • Win Eaton announced that he will be running 13.1 miles in the upcoming Bakersfield Marathon.  Godspeed Win.
  • Bob Burdette announced a few things about the Research Studies to Support California’s Goal to Achieve a Carbon Neutral Economy by 2045.
  • Garro Ellis got down to business with Jack Gotcher.  Jack is a Bakersfield native, he earned a degree from the “real” USC, and he retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving many years for our country.  Jack later worked as a consultant and then became the grand poobah of Meadows Field Airport.  Thank you for your service Jack.
  • New member Anthony Galagaza, Fire Chief of the Bakersfield Fire Department, was introduced.  It will be interesting to see if Anthony ever objects to the hanging of our rotary banner from the fire alarm behind the podium.  Welcome to the club, Anthony!

The program was presented by Joshua Dhanens, Director of the Kern County Veterans Service Department (the Department).  Joshua explained that the Department provides many services to veterans, free of charge.  He began the presentation by sharing his background with us.  Joshua considers the San Joaquin Valley home but has many years of experience working with communities around the world.  His dedication to community service was a common thread throughout the presentation.  Joshua enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1996 and later joined the National Guard.  He worked as an Army Police Officer and worked closely with the communities he served.
Joshua went on to describe the Department’s two parts:  The Kern Patriot Partnership and The Veterans Service Office.  The Kern Patriot Partnership is a grant-funded program that connects veterans with employment opportunities through partnering employers.  The operation is run by five part-time employees. The services provided include assisting veterans in adapting their skillsets to the civilian job market.  Since September 2015, the program helped 355 veterans gain employment with 190 employers.
The Veterans Service Office, as Joshua explained, is not the VA.  This County service provides free benefit advocacy for 42,000 veterans plus their dependents/families.  The benefits include compensation, pension benefits, education, and healthcare.  The Department takes a proactive approach to connect veterans with available benefits.  Many community outreach efforts are made to raise awareness and prevent the benefits from going unclaimed.  As Joshua explained, the Department is expanding its reach by connecting with the local communities.
After providing a brief update on the pending changes at the VA, Joshua fielded questions from the club and closed his presentation by accepting a stylish Bako717 sweatshirt from Garro.

Photos by Willieboy:

Personal trainer and sometimes-Sergeant-at-Arms, Jim Damien was surprised when his protégé, Jeff Gutierrez, did a training run to Starbucks and back for some coffee. It was still hot! "Good boy, now give me 50 pushups!"
Dick Porter's reaction to seeing Jeff G in a way-too-tight white shirt.
Win Eaton plugs the Bakersfield Marathon coming this weekend. He's also running in it. Hope he "wins"... get it?
Birthday boy, Jorge Barrientos, took a $50 hit and had the short version of the Birthday song sang to him.
Jack Gotcher got the "20 questions" treatment from Garro.
Director of the Kern County Veterans Service Department, Joshua Dhanens, pretty much has enjoyed every job he's ever had.
Steve Sanders and President Garro welcomed Dave Denison's latest recruit, Anthony Galagaza to the club.
Speaking of David Denison, Steve Sanders requested this photo be created as a backdrop when he stood in for him today. I didn't quite get the joke, so write your own caption.
