George Culver
From humble beginnings, this boy from Oildale became a standout pro baseball pitcher, talent scout and coach. He is always quick to point out that Bakersfield is the best city in the world... and he's been all over the world!
One of his most notable career highlights is that he pitched a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 29, 1968. This is very rare. Only 296 have been thrown in Major League Baseball history since 1876, an average of about two per year.
During his career he played for the New York Yankees, Indians, Cincinnati Reds, the St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. He ended his career after playing in Japan for a season in 1975.
After his Major League career, he worked as a minor league manager, pitching coach and pitching coordinator for the Phillies from 1981-1998.
He shared with us lots of great stories with a hilarious dry sense of humor. Repeating over and over, how blessed he was to live such a life. One of the many highlights he mentioned was that he played with (or against) 50 Hall of Famers, including the great Willie Mays.
He founded the non-profit organization called the “Light Brigade” which has raised over $1,000,000 since 1970 toward Bakersfield College baseball and local high school and youth baseball.
When not working on his golf swing he coaches a summer league club travel team.
