Andrea Hansen is an arts administrator, wife, mother, and fellow Rotarian living in Bakersfield. She is the Executive Director of the Kern Dance Alliance, an advocacy organization supporting and promoting the arts in California’s Central Valleys. She also serves on the boards of The Historic Bakersfield Fox Theater and the CSUB Arts and Humanities Executive Advisory Committee. She spends her free time with her family (husband- Michael, Alex- 8 and Hannah -6) and friends creating new memories, supporting community, and always finding time to dance.

Fellow West Rotarian - Rick Kreiser was in attendance and delighted members with live music provided by Black Market Trust who played that night at the Guitar Masters Series at Crystal Palace.

2. Good News:
1. Joe Hay shares that $5,000 was given to the Waterman Foundation from one of Juan Bustamante's prior guests, Joe then promptly fined Juan $300 for not being at the meeting with the three guests he invited to today's meeting. Juan, keep bringing your people - Downtown is grateful for their generosity!
2. Shannon LaBare noted that her company signage was upgraded by Acme Signage out of the kindness of their hearts.
Joe reminds the members that they are invited to roll up their sleeves and get dirty at the CSUB Edible Garden on March 23. The food grown in the garden is served in the CSUB pantry that assists with campus food insecurity and the garden grows nearly 9,000 lbs of food annually.
On the lighter side, according to President Hay, a costumed individual is featured in a "terrible car commercial" (Joe’s words, not mine) who happens to resemble fellow Downtown Rotarian, Patrick Beck. Upon further investigation, it appears the individual is Mr. Beck having some "Barbie-fun". As a result, Mr. Beck's appearance in the Super Bowl Bakersfield Hyundai ad has prompted Mr. Hay to question if Mr. Beck is passing the Rotary 4-Way Test? Come on Barbie. . . Ally Soper announces Susan Saelee, Project Manager at the Blue Zones Project, Bakersfield.
Susan shares about the local team doing work around “people, places, and policy” within our community and offers some statistical insights:.
42.3% of adults are obese or overweight in Bakersfield.
Bakersfield is ranked in the top 3 cities in California for the most pedestrian fatalities.
17% of Bakersfield adults report poor mental health vs the state average of 12.5%.
Blue Zones wants to positively improve Bakersfield’s longevity through the “Power 9” which are lessons for living longer and better. Susan explains those 9 initiatives and explains their purpose-based programs. Some examples of Blue Zones Bakersfield work include:
Blue Zones creates collaborations with a variety of community partners to help make healthy choices easier, like providing cooking demos.
Blue Zones creates movement-based initiatives, like neighborhood walks, to encourage the community to walk more while socializing with their neighbors.
Blue Zones has partnered with the City of Bakersfield to ensure safer streets for biking/walking. They have also assisted with tobacco and food policies.
FUN FACT: It is called Blue Zones because a blue marker was used by the founders when circling the communities in the world with the greatest longevity, including Loma Linda, CA.
