President Steve announced that the club had raised $3300 for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. He also welcomed back Pastor Jeff Chandler from a three month sabbatical.
Program
Kurt Wingate introduced Coach Paul Golla, Bakersfield High School Football Coach, who has had an impressive record as coach of the team since 2005.
Coach Golla gave an uplifting and encouraging talk about how he coaches kids, not only in football but in life as well. He believes culture is the top factor in success and trumps strategy and talent. He focuses the team on process not outcomes and they never talk about winning.
The coach likened his approach to developing a team to a tree - the roots are more important than the fruit, he said. Inconvenience is the foundation of the roots. It's inconvenient to work hard and to do the hard things, he said, but inconvenience can result in positive outcomes. Golla said he requires his team members to focus on the Big Three - a three level plan of how they are going to be successful and each person has a different way to achieve it. Team members must try to do those Big Three every day. He also directs his team members to never rely on excuses for any shortcomings in outcome - excuses are what people use to disguise lower performance. He also emphasized the need for his team to be "mountain climbers" and said there are three types of people who go hiking: those who just quit when they start the climb, those who go part way then just camp, and those who climb to the top of the mountain. He wants his team to be mountain climbers. Coach Golla encourages a culture of team members helping each other, and when mistakes are made, they encourage each other to get up and try again. He noted the rich and powerful history of BHS football but said the team can honor it but not rely on it. The team will play Chaminade High on September 15.
