4. SECURITY ALERT - Joe stated that Bakersfield West Rotary and Bakersfield East Rotary were experiencing a lawful issue where West's cherished Rotary bell went missing and was later found to be held ransom by the East club. Downtown Rotary has been advised to be vigilant, hold your wallets, briefcases, and purses close - the perpetrators may be lurking nearby!

5.  ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • February 29 - dark, no Rotary
  • Presidents Gala scheduled for March 1 (buy your tickets and sponsorships now)

PROGRAM - Jean-Luc introduced fellow Rotarian Cathy Abernathy. Cathy is president of Western Pacific Research, an influential political firm whose clients include Congressman Kevin McCarthy, and holds a 97% win rate.

Cathy addressed:
  • The "Kern County Ballot Roadmap" where she explained the sample and live ballots in the county.  She spoke specifically about the 20th Congressional District race, the politics surrounding the race, and suggested corrections to the candidate filing date with respect to the voting period. Cathy also explained the 32nd Assembly District race, the legality surrounding the Fong campaign and the option to write-in a candidate's name. She also explained the special election on March 19 that will decide the remainder of Congressman McCarthy's term.
  • Early Voting Across America - Cathy expressed her concerns with many of the primary races across the country and their ramifications as applied to the November election. 1/3 of American voters have the option to vote 40-50 days before the presidential debates.  Additionally, she spoke about easy access to live ballots (whether you are alive or dead).
  • Quiz- Cathy then quizzed the members on their knowledge of US presidents. Joyfully providing those who answered correctly with relic gifts including t-shirts expressing "McCarthy for Congress", Cathy also shared that she almost killed Gerald Ford with a toothpick when she interned for him as a college student.
President Joe holds up what looks to be a toddler sized shirt and a pregnancy test, defunct McCarthy merch from "back in the day" was utilized as prizes for Cathy's president's quiz.
