With a passion for community service, she has been an active member of the Downtown Rotary Club since September 2020. Good News and Announcements
Garro went to the Ryder Cup in Rome and brought Frank Colatruglio along with him. He thought he may have left him in Rome, but was able to find him and return him to the club so the next traveler can bring Frank along with them.
Bill Lever went to Nebraska and wanted to bring Frank, but Garro didn’t return in a timely fashion. Bill was very impressed with the 8’ snowdrift stakes on highway 80 and was thankful he wasn’t visiting during a snowstorm.
Steve Sanders thanked the club for hosting our last meeting at CALM. He was sorry he couldn’t make it as he was under the weather. CALM Holiday Lights tickets are on sale and the walking tours start on November 25.
Vin Dang wanted to shout out his company for raising $12,000 to donate to CALM.
Pete Panke wanted to know if our holiday party was taking place at noon, or later in the evening. Joe confirmed that we will not have a meeting that afternoon, and the holiday party will take place in the evening. More to come so keep checking your emails.
Girish Patel wanted to announce that the global grant our club participates in, in India has been approved for $159k. Club members asked how much we’ve raised all together and nobody was aware of the figure but they’ll figure it out and let the club know.
Mike McCoy wrote an Op-Ed in the Bakersfield Californian celebrating the generosity of Cynthia Lake, who purchased the Nile Theater and donated it to the Fox Theater Foundation group.
Joe Hay shared why he missed, yet another meeting to be in Detroit to help finalize the strike conversations. Not sure how much say he really had, but he’s happy the strike is over and says that Ford is actually happy with the way the contracts turned out. He also shared that he wouldn’t be seen on the picket lines because it’s too cold for him there.

Launched in 2019, the Hub of Bakersfield is a nonprofit committed to redefining + and revitalizing Bakersfield’s urban core. Urban cores across America have been neglected and abandoned for years, but that trend is changing. Cities are realizing that economic health, quality of life and community perception lies within the success of their centers. As Bakersfield sits on the cusp of a boom, things are changing here too.
The urban core of Bakersfield is a diverse + unique area full of opportunities. It encompasses the Rivera, Westchester, Downtown business center, Eastchester, Oleander-Sunset, Old Town Kern, Homaker + La Cresta/Alta Vista.
To support what already exists and to bring new opportunity, The Hub of Bakersfield’s programs and committees guide, support and work with Bakersfield community members + and business owners to create a vibrant and healthy urban core.
They have successfully hosted many events to make Bakersfield a better place to invest, live, work, and play. These programs include Downtown Symposium, Eat Street Food Truck Colony, Innovation Lab, Second Saturday, Hello!Bakersfield, Jazz in the Garden, Paint the Void, Blue Zone Murals and more.
