Program
This year, Bakersfield High School proudly sent two representatives, Elise and Emiliano, to the RYLA camp. The experience proved to be an exhilarating challenge for both of them, pushing them to break out of their comfort zones and engage with larger groups and individuals they wouldn't typically interact with. One of the aspects they particularly appreciated was how the camp encouraged them to actively participate in various community events, fostering their sense of involvement.
Among their most cherished memories, the ropes course undoubtedly stood out. This thrilling activity demanded an immense display of teamwork and effective communication, compelling Elise and Emeliano to rely on each other for success. Their second memorable experience was a team-building exercise that took place towards the end of the day, effectively integrating all the valuable lessons they had learned throughout the day. This experience not only solidified their newfound skills but also left a lasting impression on them.
What is RYLA?
Each year, thousands of young people take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program worldwide. Young people are chosen for their leadership potential to attend an all-expenses-paid camp to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event’s curriculum.
RYLA aims to:
- Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders;
- Encourage leadership of youth by youth;
- Encourage youth to make a difference in their communities through volunteer work and social responsibility; and
- Demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concern for youth.
RYLA was officially adopted by Rotary International in 1971, and is one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service. RYLA programs often lead to the formation or strengthening of Rotaract and Interact clubs. RYLA participants often go on to become Youth Exchange students or Ambassadorial Scholars. For more information about RYLA in your area, contact your local Rotary club or your district RYLA chairperson. More information is available on the Rotary International website.

What are Rotaract Clubs
Rotaract clubs bring together people ages 18 and older to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun through service.
In communities worldwide, Rotary and Rotaract members work side by side to take action through service.
