School started for most students in Kern County, Kern High School District Superintendent Michael Zulfa reported, including 43,200 students and 5,000 employees in KHSD.
Kat Clowes announced that school stared last week at Central Academy of Arts and Technology, which has presented to Downtown Rotary. Also, high school students are busy meeting deadlines for college applications.

Rotarians Lou and Sheryl Barbich – with Ray Watson of Uniglobe Golden Empire Travel serving as interviewer/host – shared with us their best tips and stories from their travels to 66 different countries over the years.
Sheryl and Lou caught the travel bug early in life. Sheryl, for example, studied in the Bordeaux area of France in college. They shared a Mark Twain quote from The Innocents Abroad, Roughing It: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”
Here’s a little bit of what they shared:
One of their favorite trips was to Aphrodisias in Turkey, even though Sheryl got a speeding ticket while Lou was driving (he didn’t have his ID so Sheryl was on the hook), and had to pay 26,000 Lira on the spot, about $25 at the time.
During one trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, Lou got to meet 15 first cousins for the first time.
They’ve been to professional tennis tournaments all over the world, with the French Open being one of their favorites.
“We don’t travel to eat,” Sheryl said; that is, they’re not much of foodies.
Advice: Stay in bed-and-breakfasts for a more immersed experience and to meet others from around the world.
Within their travels in the United States, New York City is a favorite and they frequently visit due to their investments in Broadway plays. Among them are “Smokey Joe's Café”, “Hairspray”, and “Back to the Future.”
