Program

Our program today was Bakersfield Fire Chief Anthony Galagaza.  He has been with the department for 27 years, 10 months in his current role as Chief.  His father was a fireman and his son is a reserve firefighter.  The BFD was established on May 13, 1877.  They answer 41,000 call each year.  2800 of them are structural fires, 25k are emergency calls and the remainder are a variety of things.  The number of calls has gone up 51% since 2008.  He is grateful for the passage of the sales tax measure as he will be able to hire more firefighters.  Station 6 is the busiest station (Union and Brundage), the respond to 771 calls/week which equates to 110/shift (24 hours).
He emphasized the involvement they have in the community and how important it is that they provide excellent customer service.
The BFD Mission Statement:  The mission of the Bakersfield Fire Department is to protect, engage, and inspire a safe community while delivering legendary customer service.
The BFD Vision Statement:  To Forge an extraordinary fire agency through a focus on quality all-risk service that exceeds our customer’s expectations.
