Good News:

President Joe Hay is getting hammered during his absences. This week past president, Justin Leland pointed out that Ford's stock prices have plummeted during Hay's presidency. Coincidence? Then Justin gave away a bunch of unearned meeting make-ups.

Mike McCoy announced a new concession stand at the museum and invited everyone to join the museum’s book club for refreshments, but you must read the book.

Ashley Sodergren announced that Make-A-Wish will have LA Rams night in Thousand Oaks on October 16. On November 16, there will be the first local Make-A-Wish Foundation fundraiser, and sponsorships are still available for this event.

Ben Laverty announced the Kern County Farm Bureau is having Bounty of Kern County on October 7 at the Fairgrounds.

District Conference October 21-22 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Bakersfield. All members are highly encouraged to attend. Sponsorships are still available. If interested see Jim Damian for more details.

Program:

Steve Sanders introduced Maestro Stilian Kirov, Music Director/Conductor, and Hollie Arnold, Executive Director of the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra. The two shared details about the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra and the upcoming 92nd season.

Hollie Arnold first presented details concerning Stilian Kirov’s and his accomplishments, including that he was called “A rising star” by The Seattle Times and a “Conductor of the first rank” by Classical Chicago Review. The point was stressed that Bakersfield has a world-class musician and conductor leading its orchestra and that our community should be proud we can attract such world-class talent.

Sharing why the orchestra is so important to Bakersfield Hollie relayed that 72% of people think the arts are a unifying influence and that 73% of people believe the arts help them understand other cultures. Further emphasizing the need for arts in the community, the club was reminded that arts strengthen the economy and help children academically. The club was then shown a video sharing information about how the BSO has reached 148,921 school-aged children through its education programs since 2020. The nearly 150,000 children were reached through programs such as Kid Discover Music, BSO Next and Young People’s Concerts, which have all been increased since Stilian’s arrival in Bakersfield 9 years ago.

Stilian presented on the upcoming concerts for the 92nd season of the BSO, including opening night, October 7, featuring soloists Kimberly Jones and Mill McMurray. Three other main season concerts will be Great Classics, on November 4, The Firebird, March 2, and Sheherazade, May 4. The May 4 concert will also include original works by two local composers. There will also be two family concerts this season Home for the Holidays, December 1, and Family Matinee Concert, February 10.

The presentation ended with Stilian sharing his belief that as Bakersfield is in America the BSO should strive to ensure a healthy balance of American composers and cherished composers from around the world.
