Ken Secor was our guest speaker today, he shared about his poor singing voice and... oh wait...
No... that's not right. Our speaker today was Win Eaton. I searched frantically for a pen as he built up steam, easily approaching 500 words a minute. Rapid fire facts about something I'm sure I should be concerned with. By the time I had written Win's name down on the official Spoke fact sheet, he was all done. Just like the hypnotist at the Fair, Win's ability to put several people asleep almost instantaneously was just mind-blowing. This was also when I realized he wasn't the speaker at all! Someone had foolishly let him be the "roving mic guy". That's like giving a piece of balsa wood to a woodpecker. Which, I realize, is a weird analogy, but just think what a woodpecker would do to a piece of balsa wood. Well, that's what Win does to a microphone, just annihilates it.

The Real Program
Elaine McNearney, founder of the Bakersfield chapter of Dress for Success was our speaker today.
Dress for Success Bakersfield responds to the needs of our county by providing programs that help economically disadvantaged women acquire jobs, retain their new positions and succeed in the mainstream workplace.
By providing women with interview and work attire, and through the mentoring, networking and support services they offer. They are supported by a strong volunteer base, an active community and many corporate sponsors. They are not subsidized by the government.
Since opening their doors in September of 2012, Dress for Success Bakersfield has served over 2500 women.
Dress for Success Bakersfield is an independent nonprofit organization with its own local Board of Directors. They offer services to help their clients enter the workforce and stay employed. Their clients come from diverse backgrounds, but have one thing in common: they are all seeking new or better employment. Many of their clients come from low-income families and want to be independent from government assistance.
Clients are referred to the program from many local area Partner Agencies like Alliance Against Family Violence, Garden Pathways, Kern Public Health and many others.
The pandemic seriously affected their program. In 2019 they served over 300 women. But since 2020 and the start of the pandemic, that number dropped to 130, eventually leaving them no choice but to shut their doors until just recently. Slowly but surely people are having to look for work as government inflated unemployment benefits dry up.
Dress for Success Bakersfield relies on individual contributions of professional attire, shoes and accessories to make our clients look and feel their best! Clothing donations can be made at 1416 17th Street Tu-F from 12pm-5pm
And of course, monetary donations are most welcome!
