Program
STROKE Awareness
Presenter: Angela Walker, RN, Stroke Program Coordinator for Dignity Health
In the United States, about 795,000 people suffer a stroke each year. Someone has a stroke every 40 seconds, and every 4 minutes someone dies from stroke. There are more than 140,000 deaths each year from stroke. Statistics show that about 40% of stroke deaths occur in males and 60% in females.
Strokes can and do occur at ANY age. Nearly one quarter of strokes occur under the age of 65. The risk of stroke more than doubles each decade after the age of 55.
The best medicine is prevention! Know your risk:
Make sure your blood pressure is controlled
If you smoke, STOP!
Decrease your consumption of alcohol
Know your cholesterol and keep in in control
Control your risk for diabetes by having your A1C checked
If you are overweight, increase exercise and eat a healthy diet
Know the symptoms to look for: F A S T
F is for Face Drooping
A is for Arm Weakness
S is for Speech Impairment
T is TIME TO CALL 911
Don’t delay! It is better to get evaluated than to wait. There are very tight timelines to obtain medication and treatment that can help to minimize the effects of stroke.
